I agree with whoever said they just wish one would win, I really couldn't give a shit.

In regards to quality between the two, who the hell notices the difference anyway? It's bound to be so minute that it's irrelevant.

I fail to see why we need to upgrade to a new DVD format anyway, though to be fair, when we upgraded from VHS to DVD I said the same thing, and these days a VHS is basically unwatchable to me.

I'm sure this will be the same thing; after five years of watching Blu Ray/HD DVD, we will be wondering how we ever enjoyed "normal" DVDs.

Meh, fuck DVDs, I'm excited for the release of LASER TELEVISION (still a long way off...)

if you watch something hd, then watch something sd (dvd) it does take some adjustment (but you don't care after 5/10 minutes since you should be by then immersed in the movie), and anyways these days scalers etc are very good, so the gap isn't anywhere as big as it was in the vhs->dvd days, and you need a decent display to start off with.

When we're talking about sony ps3's being sold when you buy a bravia xbr and they're starting to keep ahead of sales of xbox 360's and wii's steadily, you don't need to be a smart pkc to work out that ps3's in homes is bluray players in homes.

hddvd has an uphill shit fight to get anywhere quickly. on the weekend at least 3 of my mates went out and brought bravia lcd's and take advantage of the free ps3's. i'm sure if you muliply that out to people that know of this promotion, you pave way for a shit load of players now.

it's promotions like this that gives Sony muscle. not tricky specification and ridiculous claims.

that reminds me of when windows came with IE so you wouldnt have to get netscape.
since when has ps3 been outselling anything?

I think everyone is forgetting the most important thing that would put HD-DVD in the lead.

It's cheaper to produce!

The discs cost much, much less than blu-ray to produce which only means one thing, more profit.

Who knows, the tide could turn.

yes the discs/movies and the players are cheaper to produce and cheaper to buy everywhere else in the world except here (but thanks to no region coding, you can just get your hd dvd's for cheap from the US )

sony have their hands in everyone's pockets.

well at the moment the ps3 is the ONLY decent bluray player.
in particular everything else struggles with the menu cos it's freaking java.

but they're considering changing to the HD DVD menu system. lol, and since the spec isn't yet finalised it's possible.

Update: Paramount denies plans to drop HD DVD
by Nate Mook

January 8, 2008, 2:35 PM

Paramount has officially denied rumors that it will break its exclusivity with HD DVD and switch to Blu-ray. The studio said in a statement that its current plan is to continue supporting the format.

ParamountThe Financial Times claimed that Paramount will use a "get-out clause" in its exclusivity agreement with HD DVD to follow Warner in jumping ship to Blu-ray. The paper cited "people familiar with the situation," and offered little evidence.

PS3 Christmas Holiday Sales Total 1.2 Million

By YURI KAGEYAMA – 2 days ago

TOKYO (AP) — Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 game machine sales totaled 1.2 million in North America during the key holiday season, the electronics and entertainment company said Monday. The performance gave a lift to its Blu-ray video format because the console also works as a Blu-ray player.

Competition is intense among the latest video game machines, pitting Sony Corp. against Nintendo Co.'s popular Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s XBox 360. Despite the strong holiday sales for the PS3, more Wiis have sold than PS3s since the consoles debuted in late 2006.

But the rivalry between the two of the latest video formats — Blu-ray and HD DVD — appears to be tipping toward the former after Warner Bros. Entertainment, formerly a supporter of the Toshiba-backed HD DVD format, defected to the Blu-ray side over the weekend.

oh and check this new bit of news xbox360 to eventually have a bluray accessory option??? http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/12434.cfm

oh and hbo, new line and other warner companies will stop producing hddvd titles by the end of may...http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/12445.cfm

clearly it's all $$$$ and not which is deemed the 'better' format.
