Usually a crossover... but some monitors, powered speakers, and even some amplifiers have a high pass filter built into them. Some powered subs will also take a full-range input, and feed a high-passed line level signal to the mains.

Let's get down to the nitty gritty.

First up.
As correctly stated, Audiophile speakers and professional studio reference monitors are not the same thing.

Second.
Monitors ideally used for DJing and professional studio monitors are not the same thing.

Why? A DJ does not need the same level of flat response as a Producer. I'm not saying the speakers shouldn't be good, on the contrary it is nice to have good sound.
Studio reference monitors on the other hand are not designed to sound nice but to sound flat, i.e. there is no colouration in the sound meaning that they don't favour bass, high end or midrange. It is supposed to be an accurate depiction of the actual sound. This however can get tiring for the ears and you will find that if you do a two hour set you may overcompensate with lots of high and as your ability to hear this over longer periods of time will suffer.

The amount of money you would actually have to spend to get a good pair of Studio monitors is considerably larger than you need to fork out for DJ monitors.

Alesis Active monitors are more than enough for use with DJing, some people wont like them, and if you are a producer then they are way to Hi Fi but just for DJing they are fine.

Remember, as a DJ you are not doing a mixdown, you are just mixing and they are two very different skills.

You can have all the finest gear in your bedroom but remember that all gets turned upside down in a club environment. As long as you have a set of speakers that you like the sound of withing your price range then that is all that matters.

Also remember this, any Sound Engineer will tell you that people will percieve speakers differently and there is no definate answer as to what is the best or the worst.

As I have said in the monitoring thread, the best thing you can do is to bring a CD with you to a shop with tracks that you know well and know how they should sound and then listen on various sets of speakers. Make that decision yours and ignore the clap trap about getting studio reference monitors unless you also want to make music.

And remember, never base your decision on anything someone tells you in an internet forum.

Anyone using Klipsch Promedia 2.1 for bedroom DJ sessions?

These have 200 watts total, 130 watt subwoofer. I know they're not anywhere near what a lot of people want, but for me they might be worthwhile for practice and the occasional small party, or at least they'd be good on my computer for checking out music from BeatPort etc. I have 15" PA speaks but they're overkill and actually don't give much bass at low sound levels.

Store in my area is blowing them out at $100 so they're probably being discontinued (they came out 8 years ago!), but most online reviews are good. Alternative is monitors for a lot more cash.

I'm using Alesis M1 Active 520 Monitors at the moment.

Anyone else use them? pretty good and they are suitable for bedroom use :-)
