People I know with radio shows have bought his shit legally and played it in mixed sets and he gets just as pissed. I don't agree with piracy because, yea, I would be pissed if people were stealing my music too... but when youre threatening people who are playing your music on internet & fm radio that's a little much...

i usually stay out of threads like this, but....

i agree with him and i am shocked to hear these kind of responses. do you think tracks just make themselves? do you think there is no cost to making music? do you think a studio just magically appears with loads of free gear?

i spend alot of time and money in the studio and to see people respond in such a negative way hurts. i know he kinda went off the deep end a little with his post, but rightfully so he's pissed.

Nothing wrong with playing promos, as jon was talking about, but it's when friends or fellow DJs share or (worse) post promos online for people they weren't intended for that is so not cool. Before you share promos with anyone, you should always know whether the artist is intending for it to be shared like that. I have seen several well known DJs seriously restrict distribution of promos because it will cannibalize sales once it is properly released.

I don't get too many promos, not ones that I would play out anyways, so when I get one that I really like I make sure to pay for it when it is released.

I guess that is the double edge sword of the internet.
On the one hand, people can produce music anywhere in the world and make it available to people outside their local record store.

On the other hand, the internet allows for people to pirate digital media without paying for it.

As for playing someones productions at a club.
I think that as long people say "Hey thats Jon Jon's remix of Motorcycle" being played in Paris where he dows not spin or open up a record store, he should be happy that he gets credit for the remix, and may inspire people to buy a copy.

The internet opens new doors to artists, and many have found a way to benifit from it.

there is something wrong with playing promos...theres something wrong with playing them if you were not sent them thru legitimate channels.

trolling thru soulseek, other sites or having people (who also shouldnt promos) IM them to u is one of the main things that is helping kill the dance music industry.

the sad reality is, in most cases, unreleased music has become a currency to trade with other promo hungry vultures.

Its kinda funny we all know its wrong but i bet almost every single person on this thread has downloaded songs used pirated software watched a burned movie. As for promos then isnt the problem the industry if you are sending it to only djs they must be ones send it out no?
