Looks fantastic, how much did you pay for it? Say I start with 2 * 320GB drives, can I add a 500GB along the way in RAID 5? Does the drive need to be all identical?
I have no idea which brand they selected, it was a public tender process and I didn't stick long enough to see who won it.
500 bux I believe. For RAID 5 all the drives need to be identical, so if I were you just max it out put 4 750 GB's and you'd be set really. I currently have 4 80 GB WD SATA's. So it brings me up to 220 GB after stripping.

I have over 50-75 Dvds worth of pictures i took over the years, it would be amazing to have everything instantly available. One TB would be filled right away hehehe and no room to expand.
4 * 1TB = 1200$++
SAN = 400$
heheheh crazy money for storage but then again it can be paid in one night worth of work

Honestly you don't really need a dedicated NAS or SAN. If you know how to use linux, or are fine with Windows, you can use them as file servers. I had a spare computer laying around, so I filled with 1TB of drives, installed Debian and now it is my file server. I just installed a gigabit cards and switches, now moving gigs around is easy.
I probably paid around $1100 for my 1TB, since I bought most of my drives a while ago. $1200 for 4TB sounds wonderful to me!
You should definitely move from optical to magnetic storage for your pics. DVDs are not the most reliable things in the world.

The funny thing is I was actually thinking about those tape backup we used at work... i have to look into that.
Yeah i do have an old(er) computer laying around and it has 720GB in it, but RAID is what is intresting to me here and the small space that NAS is using.

DLT drives? well it depends how much your data is really worth to you, cause those are pretty expensive.
I did the whole secondary computer bit for awhile never really worked out as I always had to deal with OS crashes and hardware issues, at least with the NAS I don't have all that to deal with.
So the war is over....

DLT doesn't give me instant access to my stuff :/
But then a NAS is very hard to upgrade when all your stuff is set in place... imagine you want 4 * 2TB in 2 years, how will you transfer those 4 * 750GB :///
What if a drive crashes and you can't find the same drive on the market anymore eeek... you need to buy at least 6-7 drives to be on the safe side

I wonder how long before they start making Blu-Ray Players...
and when they do make a player, if they'll have units that support BD & HD DVD...

They have "no plans" to support Blu-ray, and there certainly won't be dual format players from them. All HD-DVD stuff will be phased out by the end of March.
