More importantly:

1. Why are females that are fanatical about music 1 in a million? How many females have huge, borderline obsessive-compulsive record collections compared to guys?

2. Why do females have such shit taste in music generally?

that's like saying

"loool
I'm into men and buttsex and I'm a man"

when someone says that most men are into women and normal sex.
ie it doesn't disprove the point, it only proves that you're an exception to the rule

and on topic:
i've always wondered about this too. my girlfriend is a perfect example of this IMO. she doesn't really like any music without vocals and most times the meaning of the lyrics affect on how much she likes the track which IMO is totally weird. i generally don't like vocals and in most cases would much rather listen to music without vocals. also most times i don't listen to the lyrics at all, i might have no idea what they're singing about, the vocals are just another instrument for me.

my girlfriend also isn't passionate at all about music and i'm the exact opposite, very passionate about it. and i haven't really met any women passionate about music itself (most seem to be passionate about the singers and whatnot, stuff that doesn't really have much at all to do with the music).

i think both, genetics/evolution and upbringing affect on how men and women like different music and different anything really. but i would be really interested in knowing how big of a part each play. i can't back this up, but i have a feeling that upbringing has a lot bigger effect on stuff like this than is normally thought.

If we take it as given that electronic music, particularly instrumental electronic music, is all about the removal of the human presence- of the rockstar, of the performer, of the identity- and often the emphasis of cold, impersonal, robotic futurism... I can see why girls are less receptive to that.

You bring out the usual biological and evolutionary explanations for male/female behavorial differences: namely that women's evolutionary role is to stay in the prehistoric cave (or whatever you will) and raise the children, giving her improved social and verbal skills compared to men.

In that sense, music that's almost deliberately about the destruction of recognisable humanity and human dialogue would clash with verbal and social instincts.

Of course, the above explanation makes massive assumptions about both the music and the individual, as well as the way the two would interact.

If you are trying to get her to seek out trance "actively" why don't you trick her?

Give her songs to listen @ home/work by PvD. [Complicated, NYC, For An Angel blah blah] then, when he comes to town you can tell her 'hey wanna see the guy who made [insert song she liked the most here]?'

He is 99.9% surely going to play it and your girlfriend might like the fact that she'll recognize a few tunes.... Rather than unn tss unn tss unn tss.

Nah, I didn't mean to imply I wanted to "convert" my GF to liking dance music. I play it regularly in the car and we talk about music a lot, but she's just not interested; I've given up any hope that she ever will be. But I don't really mind, since (a) I'm not really interested in most of her music, either and (b) we have a lot of other stuff in common.

Pretty much. The social evolution of mankind can generally be derived from the fact that the woman gives birth and the man hunts and protects. Things are as they are for a reason. Surely you've heard the details already so I won't bore you.

Times are indeed changing though. Social skills are much more important these days, while the importance of physical skills is diminished. No wonder we're all confused about sexes and genders.

P.S. As for the exceptions given in this thread, e.g. tech-savvy girls... you're not disproving anything. You're only proving that you're a social mutant.

As we all are, in our own ways...

Though I was obviously being crass and thoughtless, I do actually really enjoy it when just about anyone draws on the hunter vs. mother dichotomy to discuss gender difference in modern society and culture.

It's just pretty fascinating to me that since the beginning of modern humanity (about 200,000 years ago) those gender roles have influenced social behavior in very substantial ways - and that it's really only in the last 100 or so that we have the illusion of breaking free from the traditional expectations from the different genders.
