I think those kids should be fully charged and banned from using the TTC. They have videocameras on the premises, it should be possible to identify them, what station they got on and where they got off (I think the article mentioned it was College station). Then, if the cops can't find them, just publish their picture on the evening news, newspapers, contact High Schools, etc. The "Young Offenders Act" criteria about how their identity has to be protected is bullshit IMO, it shouldn't be enforced, because what they did was a serious physical assault, verbal abuse to several people and uttering threats (??). They also inconvenienced all the other passengers on the other lines because the subway would have been stalled waiting for the paramedics to arrive to take care of the injured person, so that would have slowed or stalled down the whole system. To dispatch the ambulance would have cost money too, in addition to the extra costs to the TTC. I know for a fact that if you get convicted of assault on the TTC, you get banned from using it for a certain period of time (not that it ever happened to me, lol), so if those "kids" get caught, I would enforce that rule 100%, and in addition, make them work to pay for the extra costs of the ambulance, and to pay damages to the injured person (the court could determine how much). Just send them to enforced labour and then garnish their wages until their debt to society is fully paid, like they do in Singapore, heh And make them wear an orange vest with the details of their crime while they are working to pay their debt, I heard that that's what they do in Singapore as well...

How did this turn from an unruly kids, to a beating thread?
IMO this is just an isolated incident. With the number of good kids out there, I don't think we have to be worried about being subjected to this type of behaviour. I ride the subway 2-4 times a day and most youths act just fine.
Granted there are bad apples out there, but that is true for any era, any time period.
The real problem with the subway is that most people are not willing stand up for what is right and just. That happens way more often when a crime is committed and nobody comes forward to help, or to be a witness. |
Wow... you must be lucky every time you get on the subway. I see rude kids absolutely everywhere. Kids talking back/hitting/spitting on/to their parents in stores, buses, subways, etc. EVERY day. Not to mention being rude as hell to other people.
Just today on my way home (i live in richmond hill btw so it's not like it's a ghetto area), some little girl who was probably about 10 years old sits next to me. Right opposite her there's a woman minding her own business, chewing gum. The kid just looks at her and goes "Give me gum!" and the woman, being nice, gives the kid a piece of gum and the little girl looks at it and goes "I didn't say give me ONE gum I said give me gum! Give me 4 pieces"! I was like WTF! Wtf happened to manners?! Holy shit, take your one piece and be happy. I wouldn't have given her shit in the first place because she didn't even say please.
So no, it's not just a few bad apples. Kids everywhere are becoming ruder with all this "no hitting" nonsense. I see it every day, and I am absolutely resigned to resort to smacking if my kids deserve it. I had WAY more respect for my elders/parents than kids do these days. It's shameful.
