A little too politically correct, yes. Not a big deal, no. It sets precedent so that other groups can start making demands. How can Harvard accommodate all of them?

I'm no lawyer but when someone becomes a student and starts paying fees, some of which goes to fitness facilities, they enter into a contract to use those facilities as-is and abide the rules and regs set forth by the university? If so, Harvard should have an opt out option for people who will not accept terms and do not want to use the facilities with everyone else.

When I was there 4 years ago they had one on the Keele campus. I specifically remember getting an orientation (in my first year, Sept 2002)and being told it was the womens only gym on campus. Maybe they removed it? I assumed it would still be there.

I have no problem with a womens only gym based on the reasoning: they get harassed in that environment, by men.

You may not be a lawyer, but your reasoning sounds good to me.

What I am saying, is that I understand both sides of the argument, and would have sided with Harvard whether they implemented the policy or not.

no man it's always been co-ed (I've been there 2003-2007)
Tait McKenzie is the only gymnasium on campus as far as I know

even that argument shouldn't pass
women can get harassed in ANY environment, recreational or professional, doesn't mean that every facility should be divided by gender

Yes, our very own UofT has been doing this for a very long time and I have never seen anybody complain. It's honestly a waste as only 5-10 women use the gym at this time.

Sure it sucks getting kicked out mid-workout but then you can just go to the other gym that's a block away.

This shouldn't really be happening to you, as the hours are posted everywhere. Time your workout accordingly. It's not really an option to go to another gym - 30 minutes between sets kind of ruins the workout

I was there in 2002, and it was a small subsection of Tait, tucked away in the back somewhere. Maybe it was a women's only time? All i know is the orientation person pointed it out to me (the area was exclusive to women), and there were only women in the place at the time.

In practice this is no big deal, in principle it's discriminatory.

This topic makes me think of the safe stop rule TTC has. At night (during specific hours) on TTC busses women can request the bus driver to stop and let them out where they want to get off. Now, I wonder if I were to try would this rule also apply for males...

My gym has a small "Women Only" section
Also has a pool, daycare, physiotherapy rehab center, juice bar etc.
Everyone views it as just another subdivision of the building
No one complains

Most female members workout in the larger main area anyway
I only go into the women's area to do weights

Anyway sounds like this kind of subdivision might solve the problem in Boston

I think the whole thing is very stupid and abuses the fan-fare "minority rights" system which has become a total obsession of the western world. These women should work out at home or adjust to the current system. period.

PS. This reminds me of one time in high school when my sister was working on a project with a middle-eastern girl whose parents, I suppose, embraced certain cultural/religious doctrine very strictly... anyway her dad called ahead and asked how many males lived in our house... and requested that my father (only male) leave the house while she's there. WTF??? lol I will never forget that. Some people are so weird to me.
