| quote: | Union President Promises 48 Hours Notice Before TTC Job Action
Friday March 28, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff
There's hope a TTC strike may not happen next week after all, as contract talks continue between the transit commission and the workers' union.
At a press conference Friday, union president Bob Kinnear promised at least 48 hours notice before any job action.
"The last thing we want to do is frustrate an already frustrated public out there," he acknowledged.
A published report suggests the union representing subway, streetcar and bus operators, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, has postponed next Tuesday's strike deadline until later in the week.
Kinnear said that he had been in talks with Councillor Adam Giambrone and they both agree on the timeline.
"The TTC has finally indicated their position to us. We had constructive dialogue yesterday for probably 9 or 10 hours which is a positive sign."
They both agreed to "advise the public so they can make alternative plans," Kinnear said.
But he doesn't speak for the ATU.
A provincial conciliator got involved in the talks Thursday with the aim of bringing both sides back to the table after the ATU walked away from negotiations earlier this week. The main sticking point appears to be compensation for workers injured or assaulted on the job. Currently the 8,900 workers affected only receive 75 per cent of their pay if they're absent because of an injury sustained during working hours. The union wants to see that rise to 100 per cent.
The transit union has said it would be willing to talk past the strike deadline if progress is being made. Earlier this month they rejected an offer that included a two per cent increase each year over four years.
Meanwhile, TTC signal operators, represented by CUPE Local 2, voted 94 per cent in favour of a strike this week. Their contract expires Tuesday which means they could walk next week even if ATU Local 113 doesn't. |
