Ive been laughing at earth hour all week.

1) its been advertised on ELECTRONIC road signs around toronto.

2) tens of thousands of trees died in order to print countless articles on it

3) the topper was watching about 10 news helicopters buzz around downtown toronto last night filming the apparent darkness. Talk about carbon offsetting!

What a gimmick!

my lights and most of my electronics were off at home since i wasn't in at the time. i was on college street and i'd say about half the restaurants were using candles. pretty romantic actually... i should have been on a date. lol.

i also did my part by pouring only six gallons of antifreeze into the lake yesterday (during earth hour), instead of my usual 14/hour.

I don't know how this is possible, but I have disagreed with everything you've ever said.

You have to lose to gain - so advertising this issue on electronic signs to have more participation is worth it - this is how the world works. I think earth hour is a great event to educate children (future energy users). It is an interactive way to make them understand how we take electricity for granted and we should conserve.

I was at a gala with 200+ people and they turned off the lights and lit candles on each table for like 45 mins during the main performance... so cool

PS. Anyone have any cool stories regarding the blackout? I missed it as I was in the Polska motherland that summer... please share

We agree to disagree. I think earth hour is a big marketing ploy that made a lot of people a lot of money. Im betting that the same people promoting earth hour also promote electric cars. Hows that for irony? LOL

When it becomes economically viable to save the environment, then it will happen. And that will only happen when we run out of oil and prices for alternatives come down drastically.

Symbolic gestures that do little if anything are a lot of money for a lot of phoney bologna.

Totally agree .. even though it might not make a HUGE difference at the time... it will educate people and maybe give them something to think about!

An article from australia where earth hour started:

quote:

What a Hoax!

Children and their big kid parents are being tricked into taking part in the Earth Hour farce again this Saturday night.

Of course it would all by a lot of fun and merriment and a true Carnival of Sydney if it wasn’t so serious the damage being done to young minds and their subservient parents.

The truth of the matter is that so called Earth Hour is a big promotional gimmick dreamed up in the upper echelons of the Fairfax Media Group to try and prop up the ailing The Sydney Morning Herald.

Last week the Herald published a 40 pages lift-out advertising feature promoting 60 Earth Hour where they conned a gaggle of advertisers to spend theirs and our money on promoting the hoax.

Our money came from the pages of advertising paid by the public’s State owned energy corporations which in earlier times when started and run by Local Government as the Sydney County Council and the like were there primarily to help customers with adequate supplies of electricity – not to tell us how not to use it because the State hasn’t the brains or nous to meet our demands.

What a Joke!

And what a great informative publication it was.

Firstly we had that great Australian Joker of the Year 2007 Professor Flummery waffling for a full page about Saint Augustine’s curse and climate change and how wonderful it would be if all the lights in Sydney and Melbourne were turned off often so we could all admire the stars in the sky!

Then we had federal Minister for Climate Change and Water Penny Wong hot off the jet plane from Bali telling us that “No, I haven’t measured my own carbon footprint yet. I am not perfect. I’m sure I could do more”. Oh yeah.

The rest of the drivel comprised of telling us about a family that doesn’t own a car (big deal) and “20 Things to Do in the Dark” which included (can you believe this?) 1, Do nothing. Just sit there. Pretend you’re a potato waiting to be dug up. 6, Toe wrestle, thumb wrestle. Wrestle. 7, Give your children nightmares by making scary faces over the beam of a torch… 10, Tell some ghost stories… 14, Lie down on some grass and stargaze. 15, Meditate using a candle. 16, Turn up the music, dance like an idiot!

Guess anyone who is sucked in and takes this nonsense seriously can declare themselves a First Class Idiot. And deserves a lifetime free subscription to the Sydney Morning Herald. –The Editor
