i duno if their still good, but i remember they were tough enough to make sure i didn't buy any stupid games.
as for today and internet media, just look at the whole 'kane and lynch' review for gamespot. they gave it a generous 6. something, and they still fired the guy, because he was supposed to give it a higher score (so says internet rumors).
i still find gamespy a pretty decent site for reviews, even though they gave halo 3 a 5, other 'popular titles' like assassins creed and army of two a 3/3.5 out of 5, which is decent, but not amazing.

Really? Hmmm...I've been reading it since pretty much the beginning and always liked it more.
PC Gamer was good but always seemed a bit sterile to me and I couldn't connect with what the writers were saying. Mind you that was a while ago and I haven't read a PC Gamer in ages.
PCPP has definitely gone downhill a bit. They've focused too much on the entertainment and money aspect of the business (as the OP was getting at originally) and some of their reviews are just plain bad. I get disappointed when I read a 4 page review and then realize that they haven't actually said anything of substance in the entire review
Their forums are much better. Real people with real feedback.
I guess you just get used to a certain source and automatically filter things out. It's akin to a producer and their set of monitors. A guy with shit monitors can still produce a much better result if he knows how they sound inside and out, as opposed to someone with the best set of speakers ever, yet virtually no experience with them.
I read PCPP and IGN for my quick info. PCPP being bad is debatable and well IGN isn't exactly great either (I'm sure we're all aware of that) but I'm used to them and know what to expect.

to be fair im not sure if im talking about the US or UK Gamer, its been too long since i read a magazine. i always felt pcpp gave games overated scores, but obviously that could just be me. the more likely scenario would be that you're just wrong

i just read the IGN review for forged alliance and it was pretty much 100% correct. i really dont think the PC guys are as bad as the console reviewers. the PC has far fewer games to review, less to look forward to etc. i think IGN are head and shoulders above GS as online reviewers go.
as for pcpp being pc gamer's ugly cousin, i'll wager that when you started reading pcpp you were too young and inexperienced to tell it was shit

Well I would have been like what, 11? And now I'm 21 so possibly but like I said, you get used to it. I'd still say it's not shit but meh, each to their own and all that
Oh and yea, I love my virile male gaming nerds, just like you love your chronically depressed early teen boys
Next Generation was one i subscribed to back in the day, pretty forward thinking...but i have a feeling most of it was fluff. there was some pretty interesting stuff there tho.
cant even find a cover image on google, but i do remember they covered the shit outta Tresspasser and look how that turned out|
