Not without electricity For how long can you keep a portable generator? I've never really seen one =/

I thought about the possibility of some kind of linguistic decay as well since language is mainly a social phenomenon... even though you could still read as many books as possible (and write notes to yourself), talking to others is not the same as talking to yourself. There's no way you could perform a speech act (e.g: ask, tell, command)... but I find it really hard to completely forget how language works because we're used to "talk" as we think.

Sure you could: just train a dog to follow your commands.

A long time. There are solar-powered generators as well, so as long as you can find some panels for it, you can generate electricity.

Well, first things first. I'd go to guitar center and get my dream DJ setup. They never have the Sony MDR-V700s in stock, so afterwards I'll go to another local audioshop called CSL and pick them up there.
Actually, right then and there, I'd have another idea to go with my master plan and go to the Mile of Cars strip in National City,San Diego. I'd pick up one of them Ford F-350 pick up trucks and put all the DJ equipment there.
Then I'd go to Best Buy and put as many flat screens as I could in the bed. Maybe fit 2 more in the cab. I'd also get the new Tiesto in Concert DVD. I'll probably need some HDMI cables too, so yeah.
Then I'd drive down to Qualcomm Stadium and head into the Master Control room.
I'd move in all the TVs and mount them onto the wall as best I can, with all of them being fed the Tiesto in Concert DVD (which is also being broadcasted to the stadium TVs)
Then I'd plug in my DJ equipment to every single channel the stadium has to offer and have a huge stadium rave for all of tiesto's fans.
The following day....

That would end up narrowing your possibilities way too much. You could still give the dog short commands such as "Sit!", "Fetch!" and "Roll Over!"... but you cannot ask the dog what time it is, nor can you specifically ask him to fetch an object if the context is just a bit more complex than usual (i.e. "the can you forgot under the bed").

Have you ever read John Austin's "How to Do Things with Words"? Speech acts are a lot more complex than most of us can imagine.

Better yet, find one of the chimps or gorillas that know sign language and interact with them.

That's also possible, but:

  • Their sign language is extremely less sophisticated than ours. They lack a proper theory of mind, as they can't see
other animals as agents, which is necessary in order to really "engage" in a meaningful conversation.
  • Even if they manage to express simple thoughts, the structure of their language still differs quite a lot from ours. They don't know grammar, and there's just one reported case of another primate "making up a word" (I can't remember what her name is... but she called a goose "water-bird"). Without grammar and the resources to name more than, let's say, 100 objects, you'd end up sounding like a 6-year-old quite quickly.

You can find more details on Michael Tomasello's "The Cultural Origins of Human Cognition".

edit: I like how you're trying to tackle this problem though, JBJ, keep going

I imagine that traveling with many belongings would become cumbersome rather quickly. Once the electricity went off (which would probably not take long) gas pumps wouldn't work, so you'd have to look elsewhere for fuel. Switching vehicles might be the easiest solution, at least in the short-term. You wouldn't be able to get water out of the tap for very long with no one running the utilities either, so you'd want to stay near stores of bottled water or some other source of clean water. There would probably be a fair amount of non-perishable food around, but it would be best to try to create some sort of sustainable food source just in case; to that end, staying in one general area would be preferable.

For the most part, I suspect that my actions would be dictated by circumstances that would arise and create needs. I might make some effort to find out of anyone else is around, but nothing too extensive.

See that's the thing I didn't get when I watched I Am Legend. How does the guy still have running water and hydro??? Totally didn't make sense (thought the movie was shite btw).

As for what I would do... Man. I'd go to stores and grab all the nice clothes I could never afford, shoes, etc. Secure a place near a river or lake for my water, raid the food stores. And probably enter people's houses and totally have a look around lol Too curious not to.

I'd also probably have about 10 dogs.
