Don't buy from a pet store. You may think you are rescuing that pet, but you are just supporting the puppy mill industry. Adopt a dog, there are so many puppies out there.
If you are really that keen on getting a yorkie, try a rescue. There are many pets over puppy age (not all are old, so vet bills won't come into play) that need to be adopted. Not many people look at pets over puppy age.
You can also try going to breeders and adopting a male or female that they are finished breeding with. I believe they are usually around 3-4 years of age. Please make sure you are going to a good breeder and one that is licensed. You don't want to go to a backyard breeder. Since you don't want to spend more than $500, this might be a bit difficult, but please do this!!
Please think about the responsibility of owning a dog or a puppy. Think about it for a while, don't make an on the whim decision b/c you saw a cute pet store puppy. Read up on it and make sure you can take care of this animal for 15+ years- it is a responsibility. Don't be one of those people who give the animal away b/c they have to move etc.

get a rescue!!! give a dog another chance at living a happy life! i rescued my shih tzu back in jan 2008 from a local atlanta group but i know their has to be some type of website or shelters in your area that you could find a perfect doggy! perhaps you can find a small dog.
when i got my shih tzu from rescue it was the best deal ever! we paid $85 for him, that came with shots, neutering, micro-chipping (which is $50 bucks alone or more) , free vet visit. also i have the greatest little dog ever. he is house broken and well mannered. we love him a lot. so look into rescue groups and look on petfinder.com

Pet Finder is how we found Tess! They are associated with the SPCA so they are very careful about who fosters animals (why they don't come to you mistreated) and who adopts (why they don't fall into the wrong hands.) Can't say enough good things about adopting animals who need homes. Adopted pets are just flat out appreciative!

look who we brought home (adopted) tonight
Meet Foxy. She's 3 yrs old and a tri-color Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We lucked out that she is AKC Certified with papers, micro-chipped, and had such devoted owners before us.
Drew's taken her out for 3 walks already. She's tiring us out! lol shes soo good. Hasn't really barked or chewed on anything Always wanting to play tho, hehe
