I just manually side-chain the bass with respect to the kick and it works fine.
Maybe it'll be worth it to side-chain other instruments to yet other instruments too.

I'm going to have to totally agree here. I used to believe sidechaining was only used for that wha/wha effect inbetween beats but I now see its full potential in getting everything in the mix to sit right. Once I learned these techniques, I'm not sure how I ever lived without them.

How many do you use in a track? Do you use them on most or all parts of your track?

However, if you read Rich's post, you'll see that that was clearly the effect he was describing. He referred multiple times specifically to the bass and kick.

As for being more "efficient" than using "an EQ alone", the question is: efficient at what?

again, you miss the point. yes, i did mention the bass and kick. it didnt mean i meant a throbbing benassi style bass and kick. i was meantioning a kick and bass because this is the area which benefits most from the sidechain compressing technique.

by efficient, i meant: 'as little work possible while maintaining the desired benefit'. i stand by my point that any track not using a sidechain in the kick and bass will benefit if the technique was added.

i suppose, but this is very rare to find a track where the bass and the kick do not cross at all.

Its as rare as a track with an offbeat bassline.

Anyways, ive found my tracks improving significant with the use if sidechain, and its also easier to actually make a good bassline with notes that does hit the kickdrum.

a usual bassdrum (especially the ones from vengeance) are longer than half a bar. so if you don't cut the bassdrum you already have bass and bassdrum mixed up.
