trance, is a genre which consists of many songs, and many with lyrics.
...lyrics is just one facet of a song.
I think this view is narrow minded.. Some of the best trance songs ever consists of vocals/lyrics !! Vocals/lyrics give extended life to many trance songs, where instrumentals usually become forgotten. also vocals are what many new listeners gravitate to. vocals are often a gateway for new listeners.
in regards to the worse lyrics.. hip hop takes the cake!!
are you kidding me? 99% of all trance tunes with vocals are pure garbage.

I like Fluke's lyrics, but we're ruling Underworld out for being "jibber-jabber" so I didn't think Fluke were worth mentioning either. They used vocals almost as texture, rather than to communicate a message.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Underworld fan. But they don't fit the category I'm asking about here. Ditto Fluke.

Trance is just about the only thing that Rebel9 does like, you can be sure of that.
Ok, but are we talking specifically about trance or progressive house? Because seriously, genres such as Funky-House and Deep-House have COUNTLESS songs with soulfull vocals on top and stuff. I mean, i'm bored to start mentioning them, because they are way too many!

We're talking about lyrics. Deep house lyrics are just as shit as trance lyrics, usually.

I know little about funky-house and haven't been following deep-house for long, but I have a really hard time to think of any tracks in those genres with lyrics that mean anything. Most of the vocals are, like, "baaaaaaby make me mooooove, make me feel the souuuuul in my boooooody".
Sure some vocals sound good (and personally that's all I care about), but this thread is about songwriting.

Well, thing is that these lyrics fit in that certain musical context. I mean funky house is related to funk which is "babyyy moveee yeaah" and stuff like that. Deep-house is similar. In that case, the purpose of the lyrics are to fit-in with the "passion" or the "atmosphere" of the tune. I mean Daft Punk lyrics are cheesy bu they obviously need to be in this specific way because they fit with the music. So, it all depends on the context. I mean, if by song-writing the threadstarter means "clever" lyrics that pose existential questions of phenomenological purity, or social themes, well, obviously, it will be difficult to find them in any EDM for that matter!
But tell you what, some 80s new-wave acts managed to "bind" together dancey rhythms and catchy melodies with very serious song-writing. One example that comes to mind is this song by OMD.
lyrics:
Enola gay, you should have stayed at home yesterday
Aha words cant describe the feeling and the way you lied
These games you play, theyre gonna end it more than tears someday
Aha enola gay, it shouldnt ever have to end this way
Its 8:15, and thats the time that its always been
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and youre coming home
Enola gay, is mother proud of little boy today
Aha this kiss you give, its never ever gonna fade away
Enola gay, it shouldnt ever have to end this way
Aha enola gay, it shouldnt fade in our dreams away
Its 8:15, and thats the time that its always been
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and youre coming home
Enola gay, is mother proud of little boy today
Aha this kiss you give, its never ever gonna fade away
Generally synth-pop and new-wave usually had very clever lyrics. Ahh the 80s...
