I went with the Creative Zen. I really couldn't decide, they both seem similar, but in the end money played the main factor. As much as I wanted a big hard drive, I also wanted something small and that I could use at the gym. I also want to get some decent headphones and so I am using the money I saved from not buying the ipod for that. I also change my mind often and I will probably want a new one in about 2 years or so.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Hi- kidnyce!

I did that to my sansa and it still works.

No, I've never purchased an ipod - my knowledge of them being shit comes from several months of work experience as a vendor in a computer store specialized in apple products along with an official ipod specialist certification from apple on all 3rd gen ipods and prior models. I've seen everything in my time there - batteries dying after a week, tons of purchases being returned within a couple of days due to malfunction, all sorts of bugs (incompatibility, information transfer problems, frequent UI crashes), burnt screens, unresponsive controls - all of this on brand new products. There are far better products out there that don't get as much attention because they don't have the marketing ressources that apple has.

So maybe you got an ipod and by some stroke of luck, it hasn't let you down yet, good for you. The bottom line is, when you buy an ipod, you get a lesser build quality, less support and less features for a much higher price. It's a bad purchase any way you look at it.

Here's a crazy concept you iPod lovers might not be familiar with:

"Removable hard drives"

Basically what that means is you just plug in your MP3 player into ANY computer and it's recognized as a removable hard drive, making the transfer of files much easier. It doesn't require the bullshit Apple process of doing everything through iTunes, which means that if somebody doesn't have iTunes, you're still fine (with a regular MP3 player). With the iPod, you're not getting those files on there without iTunes.

ps. another option for iPod though, is the Rockbox firmware which makes the iPod a worthwhile product. Just be careful cause it might void the warranty, and we all know how shoddy the iPods can be.

My Creative Zen V isn't like that either, but it IS properly supported by all of the audio library type apps. WMP, Winamp, Songbird, etc. So I am not annoyed with it at all.

ZEN!

I haven't posted here in months but you can believe me. And there is a larger size than the 16gig one, as I have a 30gig and am extremely happy with it. On the off chance you'll use it for videos, the playback is flawless and the picture quality for the screen size is phenomenal. Ipod's are simply inferior products to a handful of mp3 players floating around now days.

that zen comes in sizes of up to 32gb, and still sports an expansion slot using SDHC, which today, the largest available size is 16gb (expect 32gb to be available by the end of the year). so really, you *can* go up to 64gb of storage, just not yet (though, thats when its packed, this doesnt include other SD cards one may havine lying around)

The zen pisses all over the ipod when it comes to features and its still smaller. It plays back divx/xvid natively without the need for converting videos to h.264, radio, voice recorder....

the only thing i dont like about it, as i also dont like this about nearly every other player (except for iAudio and iRiver) is that it doesnt fast forward any faster than about 15-30 seconds per second of fast forwarding, this makes it very annoying listening to livesets that last more than 30 minutes. The ipods scroll wheel is best in this regards, as it allows you direct access to a particular point of an mp3 at any time. iRivers and iAudio do, however, allow you to scroll through tracks at various speeds; 2X, 4X, 8X and 16X which is extremely fast and does the job fine.

If it had that feature, I think id be sold.

Right now, Im waiting on the iRiver e100 revision which is a very similar player to the creative zen:

however iriver is pulling it from shelves and will offer an updated version of it sometime in the next few months.

ps. that iriver does have the 'super' fast forwarding, as well as many other goodies including a microSD slot.

The 32gb is available NOW.

Does the Zen have support for formats outside of mp3, wma, and aac? It doesn't say it does according to their site. The reason I ask, is due to the fact that I have a range of formats. MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, and some OGG also. I hate converting.
