It does not matter. Cable is not subject to the problems you are trying to infer. Cable has amplifiers installed all over to combat all the problems you are referencing. Learn a little about cable network design before suggesting things.

i hate to hear the shit about the electrician crap though. for about the past 3 weeks, the light in my house has been flickering. like it dims down for a few seconds every couple of minutes. some fucked up shit with the wiring in the neighborhood. we called the power company and they sent someone out, but never told us anything. we called again wondering why they hadnt stopped by. they told us they had stopped by and that we needed to call an electrician to come fix the problem. we spoke with our neighbors and same shit with them. they had two different electricians come out to their house at $200 each without them even doing anything. both electricians told them the power company had to come fix it. but because we live in a community, the association has to call the power company and have them come out. wtf?! so now we're on the associations ass to call them but so far nothing has happened and basically i just wanna kick everyone in nuts.

That fucking BLOWS. But if the neighbor is having a problem also, then don't call the electrician. It is a community-wide problem.

Well that blows. It is the wire then for sure. At least you did what you could to eliminate all the other possibilities! Really, being a more informed cable customer, keeps the techs happy. Honestly, when he comes to the door, tell him exactly what you did, how you did it, and the symptoms that accompanied each and every test. Even if they are the same symptoms, say that. The techs really enjoy going to a customers house and they are relatively knowledgeable and have tried to troubleshoot it as much as possible without being the expert.

Oh, and it still could be a splitter, just one that you don't have access to.

def will. thanks again for you help. although obviously the problem is not fixed completely, taking out the coupler and replacing it with a splitter did make everything better. other than this morning... the signal has been clean since last night, whereas before it was happening every hour almost.

It sounds like it could be the splitter at the tap (the splitter that is connected to the street connection, aka the tap) which has gone bad, but only on 1 port.
