Ok. What makes you think that an opener outplaying a headliner would be the coolest thing ever? Obviously, if something like that were to occur, do you think that headliner's agency would want to book them back at that same venue, knowing that their crowd would rather enjoy the opener than the headliner? No. I don't think it works like that. They would lose money because the people would probably leave as soon as the headliner hops on stage. YOU FAILED. |
I would respectfully disagree with this. When Dave Molina and I had the opportunity to open for the headliners we did in 2005/2006, we never based our mixing, set tempo or our track selections on being better then anyone else, we simply played to the crowd.
People here and there commented to us saying that they enjoyed our set more than said-headliners. Was it out fault a certain percentage liked our sets over the headliners? No. taste and preference might of played a part in it and I stuck with progressive house between 125-129bpm.... but in my opinion if I ever 'upstaged' anybody, perhaps they need to focus on the quality of their own sets.
I remember in March 2006 I opened for Ferry Corsten at Sky. The crowd was always pumped up from Dave Molina's set so I just kept it going. I just probably ever last hard hitting re-edit I had with me. When Ferry took over, he proceeded to rip the dancefloor a new one, afterward telling Dave and I he had enjoyed the sets. - My point is this... If an open happens to have the crowd jumping, there's really no reason the crowd should leave if they were there and paid money to see the headliner. Unless the opener is playing 134+bpm, anthems, etc etc.. there really shouldnt be any reason he should 'upstage' the headliner with more experience. If the headliner fails to deliver, that isn't the openers problem.

Ya, if you wanna see talent, catch it at WMC when its there for el cheapo!
But in Texas, its the same rotation of djs every year at the same month almost to the same weekend for the past couple of years. Wish I had control would bring some fresh talent in to a small venue to have a nitty gritty night of tech!
And props for bringing down Gareth Emery to Austin and Dallas.
Now lets get Audion to mosey on down to Austin again!!!
