The short answer is yes.
It's a good start that you have the good sense to imagine that if the ingredient list reads like a treatise on chemistry, then there might be something amiss. But the best recommendation I can give you is avoid all "health foods" like the plague. Unfortunately, almost all "vegetarian" foods fall into this category, since vegetarians tend to be the kind of people who buy this garbage hook, line, and sinker. They're basically the dietary equivalent of alternative medicine, which is to say that they are up there with religion on the bullshit-o-meter.
I'm sure there's the rare item out there in the health food category that is genuinely healthy without being exactly the same thing at a higher price, but such things are rare and it's NOT worth the effort to try to find them. |
agree wholeheartedly.
for all the ranting about spoiled meats, antibiotics, et al there are just as many people accepting processed veggies as some organic/health food holy grail.
unless you made it/grew it/cooked it, there is a good chance it isnt good for you. if you had to order it off a chinese web site, also likely not good for you.
its also a statement on our society when food goes from a stubborn necessity to something that people can endlessly pick and choose to the point of absurdity. normal veggies are cheap, forzen veggie meals arent...which is the better option?|

I just want to know your thoughts on Soy and other meat alternatives. Still stray?? |
Well the truth is that there has been a lot of scientific research done on diets containing a lot of soy in lieu of meats and despite how much work has been done the result has been yet more questions rather than answers. Personally, I am skeptical of both those who say that soy is healthier than the typical consumer meat product, and I am also skeptical of those who say that soy is going to give you cancer, make it so you can reproduce, turn you gay, et cetera...
The problem I have with soy products and other meat alternatives is that they are usually heavily processed and have a list of ingredients that is often of epic proportions. Both of those are warning signs.
If I were going to use a meat alternative, I would probably use soy products because I know for a fact that they are a good source of all the amino acids you are missing when you skip out on meat. But I admit that if I were going to go that route, I would definitely do more research before choosing among those options, although I suspect that I would mostly find more frustratingly contradictory evidence, as exists with the supposed benefits/harms of soy.
In the absence of more conclusive scientific research, my opinion is that the healthiest thing to do is to try to consume foods that are as close to how they exist in nature as possible. And while the meat you buy at the market is definitely not 100% like it would be in nature (this is true even if it says "organic," though in those cases it might be closer), it's definitely closer to what exists in nature than meat alternatives. So that's why I tend to stick with regular old meat -- or at least that's how I rationalize it. I admit that I also am a person who just really enjoys meat and can barely stomach the alternatives, so it might affect my beliefs to some degree even though I try to be as objective as possible. I think biznology's post is great too.

Mel, save yourself some headache, and get a food saver. Also start to plan out your meals that you would ordinarily cook. Create the portions that you would cook, but leave it raw. Put it in those food saver bags, and then freeze it. All that needs to be done usually, is a short cooking session of about 15-20mins. Your freezer will be full of things to just cook in small, perfect sized portions.
Also, that big list of ingredients you saw. It said that thing about very little salt, and then you see all the variants of salt, which are still salt, in the list. As previously said, just avoid it if it has all that shit in it.
And in an effort to just eat healthier, pretty much just cut out soda, fast food, energy drinks, coffee, and anything high in sugar if you haven't already done so. That is what I did, and it really helped boost my energy level a lot. And helped regulate my weight better, even though I am still quite thin (155 @ 6ft). Oh and eat lots of fruits, change your meals to be 6 small meals, and drink lots of water.
