They do but they are not coming from a music production angle. This unit isn't a limiter or compressor it's a automatic gain control unit (AGC), it seems a compressor should be called a DRC - dynamic range control (unit?).

It seems this unit soft clips peaks adding harmonics - seems similar to a vst I've been looking at called Event Horizon but not sure.

Compressors and limiters are automatic gain controls.

They use gain automation to change the dynamic range of a track.

But isn't gain purely changing the amplitude of signal not the dynamics. A compressor affects the gain only if it exceeds the threshold set by the user?

I seems this tool just raises and lowers the volume to try to give a steady level but adds some soft clipping when levels get too high? So it looks like this is similar to gentle overdive.

If you change the amplitude of a signal by different amounts at different points in a track, you change the dynamics.

That's what a compressor does. How much it changes the dynamics will depend on what compression settings you're using.

Yes. That's the point of using a compressor: to make the dynamic range smaller by lowering the volume only when the signal goes above the threshold.

In relation to this tool hey class it as a automatic gain control (AGC) unit and reading around it seems that there is also a class of processor called a dynamic range control (DRC) which also has a compressive affect to audio.

So what is this doing when it processes? overdrive, softclipping limiter, valve/fett/optical compressor emulation or all? Just curious

It sounds like it might be trying to emulate the sound of analog compressors and other analog gear, which can sometimes produce a pleasant kind of distortion if turned up to high volumes. From the way people have been describing, it sounds basically like a compressor that colors the sound a bit.
