never tried mescaline, just never run into the stuff or particularly sought it out. maybe if i come across it. acid always make me feel incredible, not gross and chemmy (maybe an RC or impurities?), but I do have a slight preference to shrooms in the body high regard.
as to the question why you want a sober sitter, it just makes you feel a lot more comfortable to have someone around who you know is safe and friendly, has been where you're going or maybe somewhere similar, and is sober and able to reassure you that everything is ok back in reality (and you trust to be able to keep it that way). you don't want to be worrying about things, you want to be enjoying the experience.

the rest is not history, you go on to contemplate the most insignificant things.
for example, The this table is wood, but what is wood, and why is it wood. Who created it, and who did they create if for. What does create even mean?
Shrooms are more times then not a confused mind fuck, the first few times are fun, but hardly can you take them beyond that or to the next level, and they just become a senseless mindfuck.
id rather take LSD any time
