I was chilling outside on my friend's patio then we heard something like loud. And we thought it was thunder. And this was in Mississauga.

and if you were one of the tenants or homeowners impacted, you'd be first in line to hold Miller, McGuinty or whoever responsible and demand compensation or prosecution right?

or would you say "shit happens" and leave it at that?

I would want to know what exactly happened first before i started making nimbyish statements. Furthermore i probably wouldnt have moved next to an industrial site in the first place.

I feel bad for these people but at the same time, who do we blame? The business? Or the people who moved in next to it?

And yes i know that the propane place came about 4 years ago but the area was zoned decades ago (before housing was built) for industrial use including flammable gas which is why they were allowed to build there. I dont know about you, but when i move into an area i do a full investigation before i decide to move there.

Having said that, if the company is negligent they should pay for all damages.

I just hate to see all the blame laid on the business without any responsibility falling onto those who decided to live next to an industrial site. Most likely they moved there because the area was cheaper due to it being next to an industrial site.

BTW where is squinty mcguinty in all this? I havnt seen him say a thing on TV. I guess this is just another caledonia event for him

they are still trying to figure out how this one firefighter passed away but they don't think it was the actual explosion or rescue efforts. They think it was just dealing with the stress or something.

the plant has been there for 4 years, some people lived there for 16 years
and I guess not everyone could afford to move

yes but it was zoned industrial for decades and before houses were put there. A quick check to city records would have seen that it was zoned for hazardous combustables as well. Also, I wouldnt live next to industrial plain and simple. Its just common sense.

People need to take responsibility for their own decisions. Im not saying that the company shouldnt pay for damages if they were negligent. Im just addressing the NIMBYs who suddenly are on the ban wagon. Obviously there are people willing to take a slight risk by buying cheaper next to industrial sites. Thats not the industry's fault is it?

it's highly unrealistic to expect every tenant to check the zoning of their area and to investigate what businesses operate within city blocks of them. homebuyers *should* take a closer look though.

but at some point, you have to make a leap of faith and assume that if an area is zoned to permit residential dwellings that it is, at minimum, safe to live there.

I don't think it's unreasonable for the people impacted to be demanding answers and questioning whether such a facility shouldn't be required to operate in an area zoned 100% industrial.

i.e. it's not the company's fault that it was allowed to operate there...that may lie with zoning officials.

btw...lots of areas are zoned for mixed use and never actually see mixed use develop there. If you've lived there for 16 years, done your due dilligence and checked out what's around you, is everyone expected to chose to move when a propane plant goes in? highly unrealistic expectation.

in any case, I think it's highly unfair to pull out your typical NIMBY remarks here. This isn't a case of some jackass buying a condo in the entertainment district and complaining about more noise than usual. People not be expected to anticipate the possibility, and assume the risk, of what happened in this case.
