I think that just about everyone wants to be rich, actually. By "rich" I mean having enough money that you probably won't ever have to worry about whether you'll have enough money to do what you want. Who the heck wouldn't want that?

Defining "rich" in that way means that whether a person is rich will depend on how much stuff he wants, of course. Not everyone wants to have a Paris Hilton level of wealth. But I do think that just about everybody wants to be "rich" in the sense I outlined above.

Bottom line is that most people aren't gifted enough to be at the top of anything no matter how hard they work. I don't see though how that stops someone from having self esteem. I have self esteem because I'm a human just like everyone else not because of my bank account.

If someone offered to transfer a billion dollars to your bank account without telling anyone (and assuming the bank allowed you to hold that much without closing your account), would you turn him down?

I think wanting to be 'rich' for most people has a deeper underlying meaning. I think it goes beyond money and is more of a "Will i ever have to worry about food, housing, clothing, healthcare, etc ever again". ie can I provide for myself/family comfortably forever.

But then yes, there are a lot of "I want 10 Ferraris" people out there too.
