That's funny you did that....cause I work in IT and although my scripting skills suck and it's not my field...I was telling a buddy of mine about 'our' dilemna in ScratchLive and he was like..."dude...I'll whip up a script that will do that". I just never followed up with him...figured Scratch live would come up wtih it on it's own.

I may have to check your stuff out!!

Oh, if you're in IT and know computers, than ScratchTools will be a piece of cake for you. Should really check it out. And we have detailed guides (text and videos) written in plain English with lots of pics and examples for all the commands.

Seems like using iTunes to manage your music is easier... provided you don't hate iTunes.

The Serato iTunes integration is dynamic...

You can just re-drag the entire folder onto the crate and it will only add the new songs. You don't have to re-drag the individual files.

However, a friend of mine and SratchLIVE guru has written a program, ScratchTools, that can do exactly this, sync crates to folders, as well as a bunch of other cool things ScratchLIVE cannot do (yet) like export crates to text files/Excel (great if you need a text file print out of your set you played last night, or cataloging your entire collection), exporting songs in a crate to another folder, order all your crates alphabetically, etc. ScratchTools is command line based though, no GUI (yet), so if you're timid of command line and code or not that computer savvy/geeky you might have a little trouble. But it's not that complicated we'll help you out on the ST forums if you have trouble. Plus you can write scripts for it so you only have to set it up once, then just run the script whenever you add new files to your folders. So, if you want to check it out... http://scratchtools.de/

Well, I do hate iTunes, at least with SSL. I don't like something else managing my music. I already have a very meticulous folder structure, I don't like iTunes moving and copying things to different locations on how it thinks they should be organized (yes I know you can turn this off in iTunes, but still, this is the default behavior and many people don't know this). Plus, iTunes usually gives most SSL users headaches at one point or another and usually causes more problems than it solves. Trust me, I deal with this on a daily basis on the SSL Help forums. Plus, let's not even get into trying to move an iTunes library from an internal drive to and external drive or another computer. Yes, I know it can be done and there's even programs that will do it, but just from a (SSL) support standpoint, iTunes is a major pain. Plus if you store all your music on an external drive and want to plug it into someone else's computer and play SSL, you're screwed. With crates, you can plug your external drive/memory stick into any computer and have all your crates show up. Can't do that with iTunes/playlists, at least not without messing with the other person's iTunes settings, which I'm sure they wouldn't want you doing. Or they may not even have iTunes installed.

But, iTunes works great with SSL for a lot of people, just not me. Don't get me wrong, I use iTunes, just not for SSL. Though I do think smart playlists are ingenious.

I have no problems using it with Traktor (previously Serato), I actually like that it manages my music and I just manage the meta-data. If I were going to use my external drive with another persons DVS, I'd just create some playlists and drag the MP3's into folder.

To each his own I guess. Either method has advantages and disadvantages.

Do you have the "copy files to my iTunes library" option selected?

Really itunes is bad for just "playing" a track. If you want to do that, open it in quicktime. Otherwise it'll try to manage it.

KONIX....you hit the nail on the head! I feel the exact same way. I kinda feel dumb cause I don't know Itunes enough to have found the option to turn off the settings that enable Itunes to be so involved (doing that now). I've always really liked how I sort my music and as soon as I get familiar with the auto scripts taht we spoke about earlier....or ScratchLive makes the addition to the software....then all my prayers will be answered!!

Yeah you just need to develop a work flow that works for you

My work flow for new tracks:

1. Download new tracks to a "New Tracks" folder on my iMac desktop.
2. Open mixed in key, let it key the tracks.
3. Drag newly keyed tracks into iTunes into a "New Tracks" playlist.
4. Open Reason with a piano sound, fixing any tracks mixed in key keyed incorrectly by checking them by ear (MIK is wrong quite often, but does speed up the process)
5. Change the genre tag to one of my custom genres, so that the new tracks show up in the appropriate smart playlists.
6. Once I have that done, I use "Tuneranger" to synchronize the "New Tracks" playlist to my Macbook Pro over the network (which is where I DJ from)
7. Open Traktor and let it build the overlays for the new tracks.

I also tend to make playlists in iTunes for when I know I'm going to be playing a set with specific "feels" or "moods". I also sync these up to my laptop.

Keeps everything nice and well organized for me, with a copy on both my iMac and Macbook Pro. And when I plug in my iPod to my iMac, I get the new tracks as well as my playlists for listening in the car.

Oh, and once every few weeks or so I use a great tool called "SuperDuper" to make a bootable full backup of both machines to external hard drives, which I then store in a safe.

This is what i'm finding to be the most difficult part of Dj'ing...... Time.
I literally don't have enough time to mess around on my decks let alone start finding and organising music.

But the above is a very nice fast way of organising the tunes..

I might just start using that method.
