I wouldn't call it poor information then. I'm waiting for some in depth user vids from youtube to check it out in practise.

I just bought mine from Ebay, I hope It'll arrive on Friday ... probably should wait for reviews etc. but just couldn't stand the pressure

Just hope it'll be as good as i hope it'll be ... squeezing 300 squid was a bit tight

Try buying 35GB of samples somewhere. A regular sample cd of 700MB often costs more than 50$. So 35GB of sample cd's will cost you at least 2500$.

If this program will cost around 500$ that should be considered a bargain. I can understand it's too much for some people. But I think it's cheap for what you get. And then sample cd's are less editable than these sounds are (natively). Can't get any better.

Plus I think you either haven't used any spectrasonics products and think you know, or you haven't used them enough .
I think their plugins offer amazing quality, are inspiring and offer great flexibility. I haven't been as impressed by other products as I have been with the Spectrasonics romplers honestly.
Spectrasonics FTW

With kind regards from your Spectrasonics fanboy.

Spectrasonics products tend to be buggy in my experience, and hard to work with... just a personal thing though probably.

I've got Stylus RMX and haven't found even one bug, so I don't know about that. It has a very powerful interface, but not very intuitive when you start to work with this software, but after watching tutorial vids it all makes perfect sense : )

Ok so after almost 2 h of installation from 6 dvds and downloading a patch I got Omnisphere ready on my system.

After playing with it for few hours I can say a few things, well first of all : I can't really judge its overall worth in my studio until using it (or trying to) in a few tracks.

So far (IMO and in context of EDM of course) :

Pros :

- Sound is rich and detailed

- There is a Synth option with 2 osc per voice (+ unison or additional 4 in Harmonia mode), but its a bit awkward to program and ... really its a supplement to the other option, which is sample playback mode

- Sound library is rich and diverse

- Sound browser is fine (not the best but will do)

- Arp is standard, less robust than lets say Predator but a little more than Virus TI

- FX section is robust as always (almost the same as in Stylus RMX)

- There is a LOT ... LOOOOOT of soundsources (samples) which you can use to create loads of sounds, most of sound sources are usable

- Robust modulation capabilities, quite easy to manage + multimode freestyle envelopes, that makes a nice combo : )

Cons :

- Sample mode lacks one major feature, which would'ev made it awesome : time/playback manipulation (like in V synth), thats a shame really cause you can do so much more on a few years old vsynth thanks to that feature ... well I thought its a must in a modern sample based synth, here its absent

- ... so sample playback feels most of the times like, yes, sample playback on steroids, nothing more nothing less

- Although there is a very big and diverse library, there is a lack of consistency and quite a number of the patches is not as playable as you would like (although horror soundtracks producers will find a lot of use here : P )

- So you end up thinking, how can I fit this kind of sound into my track ????!!!??? in stead of, WHOAAA thats amazing what I can do with it in my track, at least most of the time

Saying all of that, I have to add that its a unique, fist of a kind instrument, but the lack of usability of a number of patches and awkward programming is not justifying the pricetag unfortunately.

PS. its my first opinion about Omnisphere, so it may change for the better or worse after production of few tracks. If omnisphere have had time manipulation mechanism, I would say its awesome, but for now its only good and a bit weird.

Just to add to the cons in the post above mine (which I don't necessarily agree with btw), if you're considering purchasing Omnisphere and expecting it to be a trance/dance preset machine, you're probably going to be very disappointed. It's a very diverse instrument and, like many of Eric Persings offerings, comes with a large portion of the library dedicated to soundscapes, textures, drones, effects, etc. that are aimed at the film scoring market - that's where Spectrasonics cut its teeth after all. But, there are a lot of excellent EDM-type presets and it includes the Atmosphere library. So, expect to be programming your own sounds, which is surprisingly easy to do with the clean GUI and intuitive layout (similar to all of the Spectrasonics VSTs) and the huge library of usable samples, as csfp alluded to.

I'll hold off on giving my detailed thoughts until I've had more time to dig deeper.

I have to agree that its very useful for film scoring For EDM its another way of adding organic sounds to your mix, but as Cryophonic mentioned, a lot of programming is involved (which is good : ) , for me at least).

Additionally I just thought of running psychoacoustic samples form omnisphere (which are great) through synthesis engine of Alchemy or CronoX ... thats a plan for the future

There is a first demo track 100% made in omnisphere.. that shows that omnisphere can also do electro synths pretty well

Just a little update after a week with Omnisphere :

- You'll be disappointed after auditioning the presets
- But you will be VERY VERY VERY pleased after you get over the first steps of programming

If I were to judge by the presets, I'd say that it's a little cheap and a little crappy and I wouldn't buy it for the price. Judging as a programmer I say that :

It really is Omni, covers a LOT of ground, synthesis is simple and fun, sound sources are rich and brilliant, modulation capabilities are awesome, multimode free envelopes, 6 LFO's per patch, LOADS of (semi quality but never the less) effects processing (most of them are hit or miss). You can easily let your imagination go and program your own library for hours, and hours and I have a really great time doing so every day : )

So If you consider yourself a programmer rather than a preset-user and you're bored to tears with classic synthesis then don't think twice about Omnisphere, you can't go wrong with that one really.

If you only use presets and don't care bout sound design, programming and such, stick with something else
