If you want to buy in read about dollar cost averaging. At the end of summer '07 it was supposedly a good time to buy in, well after the ^DJI had taken a 1000pt hit it looked good, now it doesn't.
Drip feed over time and diversify instead, you won't take it up the ass so bad.
