To be honest, though, that's probably an incomplete explanation. For instance, better-educated people may be more apt to recognize and appreciate the burdens, both financial and non-pecuniary, that parenthood imposes on an individual, and people who do so are probably less likely to impose that burden on themselves than people who are less cognizant of it, or who, because of other factors such as government aid, are less likely to actually bear the burden themselves.
Moreover, education level probably correlates to some degree with the overall degree of deliberateness with which individuals plan and carry out various aspects of their lives, so it seems likely that we would see more inadvertent pregnancies among the less educated. |
I can't believe the thread got this far before this was posted.
They were the same two points I was planning to raise, but you did it far more succinctly and eloquently than I would have.

Education is also a fairly broad margin to paint on society, especially the US and a lot of developed countries where anyone with enough money can get an education, they're not necessarily a better product because of it either.
Just an educated idiot.
Most of the girls I went to school with where 'well educated' and its really no surprise that quite a lot of them just ended up drunkenly fumbling around with some chap and getting knocked up, married, divorced and an endless stream of serial monogamous/parasitic relationships.
They're just as pointless as the government school morons which end up doing the same. |
Powerful post right here, folks. I enjoy seeing topics that provoke insightful responses like this.
Honestly, the idea of paying for contraceptives with taxes as an alternative to funding the costly mistakes of fools never crossed my mind before. It is a really interesting take on things.
My opinion has always been that it's extremely irresponsible, or downright malicious, to bring children into this world when you have no resources or any ideas on how to properly raise them and provide for them. All parents, in my mind, should consciously put themselves in a position where they can support a child and make absolutely sure that they have a plan for when things go wrong or take an unexpected turn. What if your child gets sick? What if you lose your job? What if you pass away?
If you can answer all the hard questions and are willing and able to make major sacrifices for the sake of being a parent, then I fully support your decision to be one. Otherwise, I think you are making a mistake. Maybe you'll survive if you somehow produce an exceptional human and get lucky, but statistically the odds are against you, so I hope you're not too crushed when you end up like the rest of the failures who populate this planet.
As for me, I do plan to have kids (yes, plural) but not anytime soon barring some radical change in my financial situation. I have a girlfriend who is willing to have my children, but we're 100% focused on our studies and enjoying each other right now. When the time is right, I'll put my seed in her.
