Velocity. Most important in my opinion. Nothing worse than a static non dynamic hi hat pattern.

Swing. Very important for emphasizing a particular groove. Try selecting just certain notes within a hit hat loop and apply varying amounts of swing. I can't emphasize enough how much life this can add.

Tune. If using a sampler, play the hi hat/s with just the kick drum. Pitch each one up or down until it gels better with the kick drum.

Transient design. Using transient enhancers can help enormously for designing your transients. I would never use a compressor on hi hats, but rather either sonnox transmod or spl transient designer. Using these tools you can make percusion sound snappier, make sounds sound as if they are jumping out of the speaker, reduce room ambience on recorded samples, dull the attack of snappy sounds etc.

EQ. Removing the low end of hi hats can sometimes work. In house music it very much sounds better alot of the time to not do this. It will give you a dirtier sound which is often wanted/needed.

Group. Group all the hi hats. Try sending to a VERY short room type reverb. IR works well here. Play the hi hats in the mix with the kick drum. Turn the the reverb send up until you can just about hear the reverb, then back off by a few db on the send amount. This reverb wont be obvious and you probably wont be able to hear it as such when listeneing to the track but if you take out the reverb it will often sound as if somethings missing. This will often help "gel" your percussion together as it will sound as though everything was recorded in the same room.

Bit crush. Experiment using bitcrushers, automating the bit crusher amount for hard tech trance/house sounds.

I could carry on. Theres so many methods that one can use.

Maybe i will start a tips and tricks thread on ways to get a good sounding bassdrum, how to make the kick and snare/clap work together and different ways of using compressors and eq's etc?

Plese do create a tips and tricks thread dannib. You seem to have a wealth of knowledge and I'm sure everyone here would be grateful.

Processing a highly structured and complex pattern of sensory input as a unified percept of "music" is probably one of the most elaborate features of the human brain.....understanding how music is perceived and how it may elicit intense sensations is far from being understood.
