Read the Bill and Melinda Gates article. I am not saying that he wasn't generous for giving however much he gave away - I am simply putting (imo a rather shocking) economy of scale to it.

It really bugs me when people are hailed as things they aren't.

sometimes when you have so much money its actually more beneficial to donate to a charity for tax purposes, while i don't think he was greedy i do agree that he did not donate enough for one of the richest people in Canada.

Leaving a legacy for the next generation is sometimes not the best thing, your kids would be spoiled spending back and forth, i'd want my kids to work and earn their own living and not live off money that i've earned through hard work, even if it's bilions, doesn't matter.
I think Bill Gates is doing something similar where he is only leaving like a million bucks for his kids. I'm not exactly sure of the amount but something along those lines.

I would have to agree with Rachel here. I respect Mr. Rogers as a business man, and my condolences goes out to his family.

Is Ted Rogers a philanthropist? It depends on each person's definition of what a philanthropist is.

In my opinion I wouldn't consider Mr. Rogers philanthropist of the year, or a hero of the nation for his charitable work. He is generous for donating money into schools and hospitals though. But the point that Rachel makes saying that he gives 0.7% of his total worth is dubiously worth the title.

The Bill & Melinda Gates donated a lot more, same with Warren Buffet donating 31 billion dollars in comparision (and by donated to net worth ratio)

I don't think any of us know him personally to comment on whether he was doing this out of the kindness of his heart or to boost PR. However, the amount itself he donated did help a lot of people out.

I certainly didn't respect his business practices, as I found them to be hurtful to the consumer, and sneaky. Over the last 10 years, I have moved as far away from Rogers' products as humanly possible, because some how I always felt like I was getting screwed.

As of right now, I no longer subscribe to any Rogers' products. The worst thing is that Bell used to be better, then they picked up on Rogers' practices, and followed suit to become an evil corp.

Unfortunately I still have to deal with them in order to watch Jays' games, that is the worst part. Every time I go to the Sky Dome, a little bit of me dies looking at that giant red sign.

As for his philanthropy, Rachel are you for real? You expect the man to liquidate, and loose control of his company to in order to then give the money away? Why bother working towards anything? Those were his assets, he had every right to do what he wanted with them. If the guy gave away $50 million, then he gave away $50 million. Until you build an empire, and have the opportunity to give that much away, I don't think you should be talking. The fact is, he could have not given any away, but he did. I'm sure that money went a long way, and the people who benefited are grateful something came their way.

be it as it may, I don't know whether he's necessarily the one to blame. I'm sure many here will argue that he's simply acting in the best interests of his company and doing what our free market economy allows him to do - which is whatever it takes to increase market share and shareholder value. if anyone is to blame from a consumer's perspective, it's the CRTC for essentially creating the competitive (or lack thereof) landscape that we have today.

i'm sure if consumers had a little more choice when it came to telcos, this would likely in turn change Rogers' business practices in a way that might have been viewed as more beneficial to the consumer. whatever he's done in the name of philanthropy is more or less a de facto characteristic of corporate responsibility efforts that the public has come to expect from any large organization in today's economy, though no less appreciated of course. everyone knows that the Ted Rogers name is essentially his brand.

Learn to read. I never said I expected him to liquidate his company to give money away. I just don't agree that he is a wonderful philanthropist and I hate that the word HERO is banded around willy nilly when it used to have some meaning.
