Never ask a question you don't already know the answer to?

Maybe I misunderstood, I was under the impression that you were assuming it was overly dramatic and doubted it without any knowledge. To answer your question:

Yes, it's really that bad. It's actually much worse in my opinion. These days, people who live further up need to ask the drug lords for permission before the leave.

Lira, as the resident Brazilian, is the hype around City of God's realism justified? It was a great film regardless, but the outcry about its portrayal of the "real" Rio strikes me as something that could be the product of liberal snobbery here in the states just as much as actual truth.

My problem with City of God (I hate that film, I think I should make it clear from the beginning) is how the story is told, rather than what is told. That being said, the film is based on a true story, and being Brazilian, I don't doubt it. But, I don't think that's the best description you can get.

A much better portrait of what Rio is like (regarding criminality) can be found on The Elite Squad, released in 2007. Infinitely better (both production and plot wise) than "City of God", I think "The Elite Squad" describes the current situation of Rio de Janeiro more faithfully, even though it's just as violent.

Hmmm... good to know. I had no real problem with form though... that said, I think I might have enjoyed City of Men slightly more...

Haha, I feel old when I read my first posts and remember I had no girlfriend and didn't know a single word in Japanese (my major in university) when I registered.

I'm now a graduate student and I'm engaged... and I'm still here

I am looking in particular for some oriental movies. Stuff that needs English subtitles, because the entire movie is in a foreign language. Maybe some old movies with Jet-Li or Jackie Chan. Shit, even Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon would cater to my interests at this point. I just want something interesting to watch.

Any suggestions?

too much action and special effects and then you go and say jet li and jackie chan

That's the really creepy part, isn't it? If I'll be lurking in the COR in another 7.5 years I'll know something's wrong for real.
