TA has managed to single-handedly open my eyes up to many genres I would have never bothered exploring before... and much of this was undoubtedly due to the overwhelming amounts of cynacism aimed at the genre that brought me here in the first place. I hate to admit it, because it makes me sound flimsy and malleable, but it's true. All the cynacism has affected my musical taste, over time... but, not because I'm trying to conform to some "elitist" group of musical snobbery or see how far off the beaten path I can go. It's because I figured that there had to be something to it all. And, there was.
However, the problem is that I got to the point where, every once in a while, I had to actually step back and examine myself, and go "am I rejecting this song because I dislike it, or because I'm not 'supposed' to like it." That, my friends, is fucking silly. Thankfully, I realized all this, and now I just listen to the music that I like. You just have to make sure that you don't get caught up in all the snobbery for snobbery's sake. I'm glad for this process overall, though, because I learned a lot from it and am now a lot more open-minded about music than I was several years ago. |
I think I can totally relate to this.
I would say I've gotten to a phase where bashing trance seems unnecessary to me simply because I don't rely on a single genre to deliver me good music to listen to. Why should bother me that ASOT is filled with unlistenable cheesy crap when there is so much great music out there released every year which I can't even keep up with as much as I would like to?
I think it was Sykonee who was talking about this 'post-jaded' phase which he's in right now in relation to modern trance, and that's how I would probably describe my feelings too. I don't mind checking out new trance releases once in a while, I'm definitely more picky too, taking recommendations from people whose taste I trust, but I can safely say there is still good trance being made. Be it the new Whirloop album, stuff J00F plays, new Govia or whatever. I might not go nuts over it as I used to, but it meets my current needs.

There hasn't been much flaming of newbs who post 'hey i'm new here, i like tiesto, please help me find similar music lol' lately anyway. They just usually get ignored. Or get recommended some decent stuff, like in this thread.
There may be sarcasm from time to time, but in general, people get bored of getting asked the same questions again, hence the cynical responses to those threads. Let them do their research. THat's how they ultimately will find what they like.
I loved trance before, got recommended some good trance when I first joined here then went a bit inactive. Started listening to sets by members in this forum and it grew on me a bit, but I still liked trance. Started browsing these forums more learning about the type of music the clovis-rjt-nefardec etc group like and then when ASOT and all the usual trance suspects really just got unbearable, I started to like deep house and minimal techno.
On many other trance forums though, people are just too usually focused on trance that they don't even bother listening to other music and close threads about minimal, hip hop, house simply because it's not 'trance' and they are trance sites. That's the general attitude that I've observed from trance forums other than TA. Trance is a sort of lifestyle for them and a means of escapism to their real world problems. Many people in those forums seem to mix with software and have no real DJ gear since they can't afford to buy one. I believe not many trance DJs use Allen & Heath Xone 92s, yet in minimal and deep house, it's the staple. I've actually met this uber trance freak online that lost his job, his wife and his house (I think) but still had the time online to post and listen to trance.
The casual trance listener I've noticed doesn't seem to be serious about DJing hence the many shitty trance DJs and producers today, yet I've rarely seen a guy into minimal and doesn't DJ whether it be a hobby or professionaly. I've also noticed the amount of intellectual musical discussions and funny people are more in this site than others.
SO really, if those people who keep bashing trance annoy you, why not just put them on your ignore list if you think their posts are shit?
