Made a nice spacey pad patch, sort of reminiscent of "Space Manoeuvres" by Quivver (I think):

[mp3] [Patch]

It only uses two operators as it is, so there's room for a lot more complexity in there if you want to add stuff. The "saw" sounding texture is made by feeding the sine operators back into themselves; you can get the brightness from the second half of the example by turning up the feedback on one or both of the operators in the Matrix.

Thanks so much for sharing this stuff with us mate, your notes are really very helpful too. Its actually some of the most informative stuff I've read on here in ages.

No problem. Glad to know it's helpful, so I'll keep at it.

I've uploaded the patch used to make the "Catchup.mp3" file:

http://jbj.raceriv.com/sounds/patch...tchup-Synth.f7p
http://jbj.raceriv.com/sounds/Catchup.mp3 (example)

This one uses three operators. Operator F provides the initial kick, with Operator C following immediately after. Operator D's volume is at 0 until the release phase, meaning that you don't hear it until you let go of a note; that's the timbral change you hear in the example file. If you mess with the envelopes a bit (give D some sustain volume and give F a slower attack), you can get a nice oscillating metallic sound going:

Yeah, I just tried all of them. It wouldn't let me open them directly, but then I noticed that FM8 has an "Import from FM7" option in its file menu. Worked perfectly and the patches seem to sound identical.

Thanks. Yeah, some of the preset patches in FM7 / FM8 are pretty nice. I think the real fun starts when you begin creating your own patches from scratch, though.

Made a pretty nice pluck sound in FM7 today. Here are some sound files with examples of different settings:

The basic sound: mp3
Without Operator D: mp3
Sustain volume on Operator D envelope increased, with D's feedback turned a little down: mp3
Sustain volume on Operator D envelope increased, with D's feedback normal: mp3
Slow attack on Operator D: mp3
Slower attack on all envelopes (turns into a pad): mp3

And here's the patch: FM7--Pluck-It.f7p

This is the reason i don't want fm8 yet. I would just end up stealing all these presets and not learn fm synthesis. Can anyone recommend a decent free fm synth?
