I'm surprised noone has mentioned adoption here. There are so many kiddies that need a home!

I'd like to have one (in my 30s when I'm all grown up haha) and then adopt one.....you can get a cute baby without all the damage to the cooch.

However, I do want kids. I just don't see myself getting my life in order until my mid-30's to be able to do so.

totally agree. I believe everyone should have two kids. Ideally a boy and a girl. You would need at least 50,000 saved up and plan like years ahead. Crap I don't expect to have kids until i am like 35.

I always wanted to adopt but I also really want to have my own.

No telling where life will take me but I'd love to have a kid or two of my own and then adopt.

The problem with adoption is they make it so expensive, especially if an international adoption.

There's an old saying. If you wait until you can afford to have kids, you'll never have them. My wife's parent's said that one.

There's another old saying. Children are an expense, you know. My parents said that one.

Not just expense for international adoption - the logistics, the human factors, and the cultural differences will make it (and you) insane. One of my (older) associates did this at great expense, successfully, for the first time, but after a while the family started getting a little weird and wanted to see the kid again - who of course had no desire to go back home - and they were stuck in the middle of this drama.

Then, for reasons I can't begin to understand, they went to try an adopt a second kid from the same family, and to make a long story short, the whole thing fell through. They traveled all the way up for nothing, wasted a ridiculous amount of time and money. In hindsight, it seemed that the entire process was just a ploy to try to get the first kid (already a teenager) to visit. She didn't go with them, so it ended up being a disappointment for everybody.

They had a good relationship with this family, too. They even helped them out financially. But people here too often don't realize just how messed up things really are in the rest of the world.

Leave that shit for the celebrities with overpaid lawyers. There are more than enough kids right here that need families.

Also gotta keep in mind that with a lot of those overseas adoptions, the families are doing this for economic reasons. What I joked about a little earlier is very close to reality in many of these cases.

I THINK (don't know) that adopting here is really hard - more demand than supply. My girlfriend's dad and stepmom were trying to adopt but were put on a huge waiting list so they ended up adopting overseas.

I'm sure it is much easier to adopt an older child than a baby. (I would want a baby)

What do you mean you need to have 50,000 saved up???

That's a pretty ridiculous statement...

I'd say that 95% of couples (and thats my guess) don't have that much in the bank when they have a kid...

And yes....35 is a good age....

I'd say that 95% of your facts come directly from your ass.

As a rough guess, I'd say that, oh, about 4.8 shitloads of couples tend to buy houses before having kids, which already puts them well in excess of the $50,000 net worth bracket. Maybe the cash isn't lying around in some low-interest bank account - presumably because most people have more sense than that - but I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant.

Must be that low birth rate taking hold. Baby boom is officially over?

And yes, you're almost certainly correct that it's easier to adopt an older child - I sincerely hope that there aren't a large number of newborns and infants kicking around without parents (where would they come from?)

Heh - I never, EVER, thought I would have kids. Didn't like them at all. Then I had one - wasn't expecting it. However, now I can safely say it wasn't the kids I didn't like, it was their parents. I love my boy; he's shown me so many other things in life. I don't think even if I had the choice to forget it that I'd give it up.

It's DEFINITELY not for everyone, but it turned out that it was certainly for me.

It's definitely not for the financially unsettled.

I used to volunteer at an orphanage in Taipei and they had nothing but success with middle class to upper middle class western couples wanting to adopt kids from overseas (America, Canada, Australia, UK, Holland, etc.). Yes there are a few requirements of the parents (have to be financially sound, physically healthy) but it's not an insanely expensive and stressful process. There are unfortunately a lot of babies and infants in Asia that get tossed to orphanages and temples (if a couple has twins it's considered unlucky as even numbers are bad luck, light physical disfigurements, father was a western guy who impregnated an asian girl, took off and she chose not to get an abortion, etc.)
