The problem with adoption is they make it so expensive, especially if an international adoption. |
Not just expense for international adoption - the logistics, the human factors, and the cultural differences will make it (and you) insane. One of my (older) associates did this at great expense, successfully, for the first time, but after a while the family started getting a little weird and wanted to see the kid again - who of course had no desire to go back home - and they were stuck in the middle of this drama.
Then, for reasons I can't begin to understand, they went to try an adopt a second kid from the same family, and to make a long story short, the whole thing fell through. They traveled all the way up for nothing, wasted a ridiculous amount of time and money. In hindsight, it seemed that the entire process was just a ploy to try to get the first kid (already a teenager) to visit. She didn't go with them, so it ended up being a disappointment for everybody.
They had a good relationship with this family, too. They even helped them out financially. But people here too often don't realize just how messed up things really are in the rest of the world.
Leave that shit for the celebrities with overpaid lawyers. There are more than enough kids right here that need families.
Also gotta keep in mind that with a lot of those overseas adoptions, the families are doing this for economic reasons. What I joked about a little earlier is very close to reality in many of these cases.
