trancension, are you saying that in NYC if the bartender tells you your drink is 13, and you give them a 20, they won't return your change? If so, that's crazy! Tell me it's not like that at Opera. I'll have to roll in there with a decent money roll = all 1's.
Don't get me wrong, I've always been a good tipper because I've spent lots of time working in the service industry. But I would want to eliminate any collateral expense for procuring a beverage. |
Opera does it as well. I gave a bartender a $10 and a $5 for a $10 (watered down) drink. She literally disappeared afterward, and after 10 minutes of waiting for her to resurface I gave up.
I felt a little better later, though, when Bong ordered a drink from her, gave her exact change, and I handed her a quarter.

I mean, people will keep like a dollar without asking sometimes and I let that slide, but if they took 5, I would confront them. I guess I just don't understand why people can be allowed to decide for themselves if they get a tip. I understand that they can ignore you if you don't give them a tip, but I'm not going to fuel their rudeness. At a place like Opera, just go to another bar. I don't want anyone to think I'm a cheapskate, but I just can't justify wasting more of my money to someone who just hands me an already overpriced drink. I do give tips, but not to people who think it's their right to get one.

And ya, at Pacha I bought a red bull / vodka for $13. Gave the bartender a $20 and had to basically argue with her that I don't tip 50%. I tip 20% and round up in most cases. So I was going to tip $3. But after that shit, $1.
After telling that story to some NYC tranceaddicts, I was alerted to stories of them having the exact same situation arise. And then some people even said that they've had fraudulent charges done by the clubs on their credit/debit cards. The two places that came up in this little story telling thread were Pacha (where I have first hand experience it's true) and Webster's Hall.

Yep...I'm only 23 (not even quite yet) and I'm getting a little sick and tired of the club scene. I definitely have that "I'm too old to put up with this shit" feeling as well.
I already bought my ticket for Armin before this feeling really kicked in, or else I probably wouldn't be going to see him...and then after him...I think the only show I'm going to go to is Markus on April 23rd. After that, I'm probably done with the "scene."

that's tough... definitely disturbing. you need to figure that when you start a tab, with all the commotion that goes on with the transactions for drinks, it's so easy for there to be inconsistencies.
i had that happen to me at a crowded bar, not even a club, where my tab seemed unusual. it was a huge pain in the ass to try and sort it out with the bar manager, and ultimately i had to eat a few drinks.
i suppose one solution is to try and be proactive as possible- take cash when you can, and take small denominations to eliminate the change factor.
