Ya Ben's got it right on. Other dude, theres plenty of good hiphop out there. A venue out here in DC that does mostly strictly new EDM artists and mostly does house/techno/drum & bass djs, had a night with indie hiphop DJs upstairs and they were fabulous! Also went to an underground afterparty the other week that had a cover charge, and the downstairs had some banging techno, and the upstairs the DJ was playing classic hiphop and I loved it! And I really don't like commercial hiphop on the radio, just like we have cheesy EDM theres also lots of of cheesy hiphop, but they like us have their underground and breakthrough stuff, do not judge by the label, but with the way the music affects how you move your body, your mind, and touches your soul.

Hmmm theres nothing wrong with listening to numerous genres of music, everyone does. To turn your back on edm for reasons as stated is a bit ridiculous though. Were you in the party scene as opposed to being a true fan of the music ? I have never heard of someone who is a true fan abandoning the music they love....edm makes you hide form the world but ryan seacrest and such help you see the light and face career and life responsibilities...thats the funniest shit ive ever heard in my entire life. No offense but your views towards edm in this thread are quite jaded. I love rock and old school hip hop and such but i love edm for the music itself. No one i know who goes out clubbing uses drugs like that at all. We did in the late 90s but we have long ditched that and are there for the music like most of the people who attend shows these days. I know actual raves...not club shows...still exist out in cali where you guys are at, and yes if those were the type of parties you frequented i can understand why. To me personally it seems like you were into the druggy scene. I dont know though. Theres 2 types of people at edm shows. The true fans of the music, and the people who are there for the druggy party experience. Most people i have known in my life who were at shows for the druggy aspect have since abandoned the music and have gone on to a strict listening diet of top 40...which in turn shows they were never really fans in the first place. This music was simply paraphanalia to them and went along with their nights experience. Maybe at your core you arent really a big fan of this music after all...and if so...to each is own. |
I'm not offended by your post, because we obviously don't know each other in person. Everyone who knows me knows that I was one of the people who was a TRUE FAN of the music. Anyone on here can vouch for that. I hardly did drugs, or even drank alcohol for that matter. As I mentioned in previous posts, I've been in the EDM scene for almost 9 years now (not the druggy scene... the EDM scene). I'm almost 28 years old now though. I'm tired of going out to see these DJ's at clubs/bars. I'd rather listen to it at home or while I'm working out. I rarely went to raves either, with the exception of a couple raves when Sasha and/or Digweed was playing.
When I say listening to other music makes me "see the light", I meant just that. I'm going through a difficult part of my life, and trying to make things better. Hearing songs about things I can relate to and what other people are going through makes me feel like I'm not alone.
I have not abandoned EDM... I've just abandoned the music scene/bars/clubs.
It's hard for me to explain exactly what I mean, but the people who are close in my life and who know what I'm going through... know exactly what I mean.

i can understand your resorting to mainstream music to escape the drug culture often associated with electronic music, but there are better ways to distance yourself from that ugliness than reduction to the lowest common denominator. the music you listen to is ultimately associated with the setting you're in including the people you're surrounded by. if you're only listening to edm in dark, grimy hollywood megaclubs with druggies chatting your head off about drugs, then of course you're going to develop a distaste for it. i think it's only healthy that you do react that way. i've never witnessed a more rampant or casual environment for drug use anywhere else than hollywood, but i'm sure you can find an escape from all that at other edm parties with more mature crowds. i could be wrong though. in the end it's easy to continue enjoying the music without the drugs/druggies. just don't go out as much and when you do, don't stay out as long. for me, i love listening to edm on long bike rides, while running, driving and snowboarding. it becomes a soundtrack to some great scenery. listening to the music in normal, daytime settings at background levels can help you break the negative association. i can tire from listening to edm all the time just as easily, but i balance that out with other interests including silence, reading, public radio, tivo and occasionally music i listened to in high school. it's not like i've never tried turning the radio on as an alternative before, but i've found that rag is even more annoying than obvious drug users all up in your face. i would rather listen to npr or sports talk or nothing at all. |
Aww Rich, I was waiting for your post!!
Yes, pretty much the only times I listen to EDM now are when I'm jogging or working out. Also, if I go out at all anymore (like the past few times I've went out), I don't stay out late. I just don't have energy to stay up all night, and I don't have as much fun. I mostly just go out to see friends.

I love ALL music, as long as it's good.
Classical, country, rock, reggae, hip hop, Flamenco, I listen to it all. But of course, my passion at the moment is EDM, specifically deep house and funk.
Julia, you always say how you want to get out of LA, so why not come to SB for a weekend getaway? You're always welcome here. Bring along Mario and Anya, we can all chill at the beach and have a BBQ. Life is a lot more simple here than it is in LA, it's not as fast paced. Everyone is friendly, we have close to perfect weather, great beaches, and plenty of places to eat great food and wine. You can rent a bike and cruise along State Street, visit The Mission, go hiking, or even do some Yoga.
So seriously, come on up. We should plan something. |
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! I love doing stuff like that! Remember that amazing hike in Santa Barbara with the two David's??? That's the kind of stuff I get excited about and look forward to doing on weekends now!
