And Richie, you're doing it wrong - use cheap PC's as your giga's and mix on the mac. That's what all the composers I know do.....

giga was discontinued. That was how i used to do it and using lots of pcs is just cumbersome. Nobody does it that way anymore. The mac as sampler was the only way to use 32 gigs of ram. And I also prefer sonar over logic for mixing.

Doesn't matter that giga was discontinued - I can 20 top composers that do it that way and won't change anytime soon. Some of the best strings are in giga format and slave PC's come very cheap. They get loads of rackmount servers and use them as giga's. Bear in mind, money is no object to them and this is how they choose to do it.

Sonar is your own deal but most I know compose in logic or cubase, then go to PT for mixdown. I fact i don't know any pro's that do it any other way.

But if it works for you don't fix it because that's how they do it - you might well be ahead of the curve.

I'm pretty sure the top 20 composers don't use sample librairies at all. Everyone still uses orchestras including Hanz Zimmer. And the reason any used giga was because Vienna Librairie was giga format but that changed years ago. Nobody is using gigastudio anymore. If they are, it is because they have an antiquated system they spent lots of money on. When time comes to renovate, they will dump all those useless machines.

There is an article somewhere detailing how Klaus Badelt went from 100 pcs to 1 mac. It is cumbersome to have lots of pcs. Hanz is a different story because he has proprietary software they invested in years ago and you don't just throw away something you spent hundreds of thousands on. And the best strings are not in giga. But if they were , you can just convert them.

I don't see why you are prescribing something that is discontinued , cumbersone , expensive, prone to breakage when I can do the exact same with 2 computers. It might of been the way to do it 2 years ago but it makes absolutely no sense anymore.
