Price of owning a home is the most important thing to look at.
And like i was saying before, Vancouver is a beautiful city. Probably one of the nicest cities i've been too. But based on the criteria that it didn't calculate, ie. scenery, the mountains, there isn't much left in Vancouver.
Gang-wise, Vancouver is one of the highest in the Canada. Regina and Winnipeg only have high crime rates, but that's because of the Natives.
Based on the critieria of this article...Vancouver should not be in the top 10.
PS. Funky..here you go :P
For January 2009
CREA (Canadian Real Estate Association)
City /Average House Price/12 Month Change
Vancouver, BC / $536,000 / - 8.8 %
Calgary, Alb / $362,000 / - 11.4 %
Toronto, Ont / $344,000 / - 8.2 %
Ottawa, Ont / $291,000 / + 1.8 %
Montreal, Que / $252,000 / + 2.3 %
Halifax, NS / $243,000 / + 11.1 %
Regina, Sask / $214,000 / + 7.6 %
Fredericton, NB / $156,000 / + 7.3 %

you have to look at ALL the variables besides owning a home. Quebec for example takes the cake for affordable real estate, so too does New Brunswick. I'll pass on NB
But indeed it is a significant variable and the article suggests that too. Really, I should be thankful for living here in Ottawa when it comes down to it: low crime rates, relatively good employment rates, low housing costs and best of all, close proximity to Montreal
Toronto would be better if all your sports teams didn't blow. The early success of the FC and Jays is just a facade
