Main difference with flu pandemics is that:

a) It's a totally new strain that's crossed the animal/human barrier as opposed to an existing human virus that has mutated within the human population (and to which some portion of the population will already have been naturally immunized) as is the case with seasonal flu epidemics. For this reason no one has immunity to it yet and it spreads a lot faster than your average flus.

b) Seems to be killing young healthy people.. this is rare regardless of the quality of healthcare system.

It isn't the media making shit up its the WHO and the CDC and it's analogous agencies around the world.. Chances are everything will be fine but flu pandemics are fairly rare and can potentially turn into a big deal, so they have to take precautions. The Spanish flu pandemic had a case mortality of 5% (maybe more) and killed 50-100 million worldwide over a couple of years.

At the time that I had posted, they had yet to update their site. Regardless, if you review their site now, they do not openly admit that this is a huge threat. They are simply taking precautionary measures because they don't know everything about the illness quite yet.

Did you read the entire article? The Doctor actually did say that this was being blown out of proportion. Unfortunately I don't have hours of time to sift through the thousands of sensationalized articles to find the very rare few that actually use some common sense and aren't attempting to scare everyone shitless. Ok, maybe people are "wanting to stop the disease", but are you honestly telling me that you don't think news sources all over the world aren't capitalizing on the fear-mongering potential of this story? Many of the news articles are over dramatizing the situation, or misrepresenting the facts/numbers. It's all to get more reads and more hits because it's all about making money.

The "hype" is coming from the media, plain and simple. If it weren't for the insane coverage over this ridiculous thing, Egypt would not be killing pigs, and Argentina would not be banning flights to Mexico. People would have gone on with their daily lives being none the wiser.
