movie rocked...and like someone mentioned, sound effects were one of the best I've ever heard in a film.

agreed with all of jon jon's points but this one stands out the most

the hardcore trekkie in me is still going WTF. only saving grace is that this is supposedly an alternate universe storyline

didnt like the action driven movie thing much. however, i still enjoyed the movie mostly, once i got over my initial wtf

i love star trek because it makes you think. i didn't think once during this movie. lame

did anyone else catch the red matter thing was a rip off from Alias plotline?

and that giant blackhole thing was a direct rip off from Wing Commander Prophecy? actually, the huge ship looked almost exactly like the big ass Nephilim ship from Prophecy

honestly, a big meh from me. 7/10 at the most.

ST has to stop making prequels. go forward with the timeline and make up some stuff. there's soooooo many options for an interesting series/movie if they just keep going into the future.

I'm a huge fan of Abrams and a big Star Trek fan too, but I have to agree 100% with everything Jon Jon said. Bang on, buddy. I was still 'entertained'...but it didn't impact me on an emotional/trek level as the other movies did. Still, I'd rather watch this flic than say, Star Trek V any day.

Did anyone else notice a massive amount of 'reflections' obscuring almost every shot? Holy use of lens flares batman!

YES..holy crap...and what was with spock crouching the first time he teleported? yes it did make for a cinematic scene when he landed on vulcan but still..

The whole pike story being so damn different annoyed me. since they kept mentioning this being an alternate reality, they should've called this "Star Trek: in JJ Abram's (who never liked star trek anyway) Universe"

I liked the character portrayal as they maintained the minor details in behaviour but obviously did it in a younger mindframe

I enjoyed it but the fight scenes were cheese.

That fact that Chekov should only be 10 and Kirk really only made captain at 34 threw the whole plot of course but now I guess they can take all the next movies on a new direction. It was entertaining and served its purpose. Scotty going through the water tubes was lol. Pew pew.

They should take Star Trek waaaayyyyy into the future. Perhaps even after the 29th century. The Q were obsessed with the human race and said that humanity would be, for lack of a better term, "big shots" in their distant futures. Would humans evolve into something like the Q? Knowledge so vast that they could be just as "god-like" as the Q were. In the series, time travel was almost routine... at least for the time-cops of the Federation. It would be neat to hypothesise a human race 10,000 years from now. Perhaps folding space or other things equally as powerful. Maybe they would not be corporeal anymore and evolve into beings of energy just like the Vorlons or the Minbari in Babylon 5, one hundred thousand or one million years in their future (I forget the number).

Sheldon and I saw it last night and thought it was great!

They did an excellent job casting the crew, the only thing I didn't like that much was Spock being so emotional?

Still give it 8/10 though.....

I haven't seen it yet, but it's funny they'd cast him like that. In the 1960's show Spock was always hardcore... only slipping up because of a fucked up outside influence.

YES, this was so annoying... this trend better not blow up in Hollywood, it's already been overkilled in music videos...

For all people saying they should take Trek way into the future... come on, our sci-fi writers are already running out of ideas for 24th-century technology, I think it's next to impossible for anybody to even imagine what Y3K is going to look like.

I realize they broke continuity, but it's not like other movies didn't. What about First Contact? As for character clichés, the original series was nothing BUT character clichés! I actually thought they kept it to a minimum here, just throwing in the occasional nod to the old clichées because they sort of had to, and that the acting here was a thousand times more convincing than any of the other movies or series.

One criticism I do agree with was the absence of the ever-present futuristic and utopian philosophies that have always been at the core of Star Trek. This movie didn't really test any serious moral or ethical questions, nor did it really do any of the scientific speculation (er... sci-fi) that TNG was so famous for. As far as the "science" goes in this movie, it's more of a hey, check out this flashy futuristic product and/or weapon - which to be fair, felt more realistic as it's exactly how we treat today's technology, but Star Trek was never about realism. As Yohan said, this movie doesn't really make you think at all; in that respect it's almost more of an action flick than sci-fi.

The shots of the ships, space dock, learning pods, and so on, I must say were pretty awe-inspiring. I think the attention to detail was what impressed me the most, because historically it's always been left as an afterthought.

I'd give it an 8/10. They lose one point for the lame-ass villains and another point for screwing up the continuity and not even trying to fix it by the end. It's still unmistakably Star Trek, and while they screwed up a number of things, they also improved on many others.
