I think every country's most popular styles of music are some of the worst. In the U.S. the charts are filled with awful pop and rap, plus stupid rock bands generally trying to do imitations of Nickelback or Linkin Park.

True, but that's our opinion. It's popular for a reason. We have our tastes and they have theirs. And there is no accounting for tastes.

But if the music we like could become popular, I'd be a happier person.

Yep, it's a bit frustrating. For me it all got better when I was old enough to visit bigger clubs (also in Belgium) with more area's and met more people with the same taste. Also I started DJ-ing a bit, so was also able to play stuff I liked.
Fact is the majority of people have an average TOP40 taste. Below 20 indeed hardcore is very popular. I don't think you can change that.

I have to admit, I've had my share of horrible tastes.

~11yo: happy hardcore
~13yo: eurodance
~15yo: rap/hiphop and hardstyle
~17yo: trance
~18yo: house
~20yo: progressive house/progressive
~21yo: 20yo and techhouse/techno
~22yo: 20/22yo and deephouse/nu-disco

At this very moment (23yo), I mix up almost everything which I listed from 20yo on. So for the kiddies that still listen to top 40 and hardcore, there's still hope.

And indeed, thank god I get to go to the better parties/events/clubs. I have two/three friends who frequent those nights with me, but I'm always the instigator. The just rely on me for it, and I've never let them down Sometimes I go by myself, if no one else is coming along.

Thank god for message boards like this. TA has really influenced my tastes.
