I've know guys and girls who do this and it didn't so much seem that they were insecure or feared being alone, just maybe seemed more that they are users. Like using someone to satisfy urges or needs til someone better comes along.

no he's right. it stems from a deep routed insecurity or fear of being alone. they can't just simply be single and enjoy their own company and do their own thing. they HAVE to have someone there at all times to fill the void.
