When I went to Dorsia in NYC, the service was not particularly bad, it's just that the waiters and maitre d were quite snobby. The place was also filled with snobby nouveau riche people. The food wasn't anything great either. Large plates, small proportions. What's worse is that I had to make a reservation for a table.

The Waverly Inn on the other hand, was a good place. Very sophisticated ambience and the waiters know how to handle VIPs. Food wasn't that great, but I guess you pay for the atmosphere. The Maitre D was especially great when I was reserving my table. (friends told me they laugh at you when you just try to walk in with no reservation) When I ate there, Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order SVU was there.

i went to a perkins or something one time where the waitress told me to "make sure you leave a big tip" so i gave her nothing. servers who demand a tip aren't getting shit from me. when i served food i never asked for tips, that's just outta line.

also at a local diner i didn't get served for at least 15 minutes, i had to ask the manager if i was going to get served or not. didn't tip that girl either.

I didn't tip the OCD methhead in Waffle House at 3am because she kept coming back to our table every 10 minutes rearranging the condiments and our drinks.

Of course. Neither would I.

Perhaps you should try an $8 all-you-can-eat buffet instead. You can eat as much as you like there, and you never have to make a reservation.

I can't afford to eat out at restaurants so i couldn't say really unless someone took me out to dinner and payed for it all, which sadly no one has therefore i can't say.

I believe tips are there so that it is an incentive for a waiter to be at his utmost best. I think customers are best to judge the waiters performance so they are the ones who do the tipping instead of not getting tips and letting the manager of the restaurant do the tipping at the end of the night (he cant keep on eye on everything the waiter does to a table)..

Seems like it's getting worse these days... or is it just me? Any of you guys notice a trend in the wrong direction?

most restaurants I go to are urban thai/oriental joints with a somewhat underpaid staff, so I don't expect premier service (the food is always great though).

When I do visit restaurants that are of higher class, I do sense that a waiter or waitress will treat your party as they perceive it; in my case, it has been a positive experience and I can't recall the last time I was not served properly.
