the city officials are blatantly anti-english for some strange bitter reason. they seem to carry a grudge thrugh generations instaed of grwoing up and becoming the international cosmo city it "could" be.
their streets signs, subway signs and metro passes and signs are all in French only while most city's in Canada )toronto, ottawa, new brunswick, etc bend over backwards to have everything bilingual. englsih speakers are more or less shut out of eveeryhting even in emergency situations their signs are french only. They are only hurting themselves because alot of american tourists opt for something / some place they can understand and they lose out on alot of revenue, poor idiots can't see that. their subway system is outdated and not handicapped friendly. Most of the people who work in customer service are rude, tacky and nasty.
there's a ton more but i'll give you a chance to chimne in. |
Ok first of all, 100% disagree with you. While im fully bilingual, i have lots of anglo friends that live AND work in montreal and have no problem with it. infact there are entire parts of the city that are almost exclusively anglo. montreal is the most anglo friendly city in quebec, trust me there are much worse, try being anglo up in abitibi and see how you like it.
my next point is this when you make a list of canadian cities, be sure to pick ones that aren't provinces..... New Brunswick? WTF, and as a province its a horrible example, yeah they may have bilingual signs, but they dont speak french or english..... they speak the french equivalent of pig latin....
COR version,
he's an idiot

Seems like I'm a little late to chime in on this but your post is funny, because it echoes exactly the point that my friend was trying to drive across last week.
He cited an example of a couple that came from Buffalo, NY. They came for the jazz festival and overall enjoyed their stay (week-long I think)very much, having spent over $1000 on entertainment during their stay. They said they really enjoyed being here, aside fro mthe fact that they were hit with THREE parking tickets, incurring a total fine of over $200. Unfortunately, it is the tickets that they will remember about Montreal, not the good time they had.
And yes, this is because they could not understand were confused by the signs at the various locations where they parked, because they're only in french.
And as an English Montrealer, although it's gotten better as my french has improved, I have felt rather left out for a very long time.

that is a very ignorant comment. There is a huge tourism industry to the north of the urban centers that boasts some of the world's largest natural parks. I've been all around the world and have seen many amazing things, but some of the most amazing things that i have seen are in this province.
Whale watching in Tadoussac is an amazing experience. The region of La Gaspesie is beyond beautiful, the same could be said for some of the Saguenay/Lac St - Jean. The Eastern Townships are such a very large tourist attraction in fall due to the amazing site that the leaves turning creates. You only have to look at the rates of inns in that area to see how popular it is. They do not charge that much because no one goes. (not to mention a lot of american and canadian people with a lot of money have homes there...The Bronfman family, even Halle Berry lives there, there are so many more.)
As far as not fitting in, i hate to break it to you, but it is your job to assimilate and not the populations. Go live in a non English speaking country and see if they bend over backwards to cater to you. Montreal is a tourist destination because it is different than the rest of North America. It is the 2nd largest french city in the world besides Paris, and to some extent protecting the language and culture of the province is important.
If you knew the history of Quebec/Montreal (which i doubt), you might understand why these steps are taken. If a tourist won't come back because of a parking ticket, then fuck them. For every ignorant American tourist that goes somewhere thinking that it will be just like home, there are 50 who come for the charm and to experience the closest thing to European culture and life that is possible outside of Europe.
also
the big p with the red circle in it is pretty universal.
as far as the days of the week and months go, it is up to do tourist to do some research. Would you go to Italy if you did not speak any Italian without bringing at least an English to Italian dictionary?
think about it a bit and then go sit in the corner.
pps: i know tons of Anglophones who have lived here thir whole lives and don't speak any French. (which is stupid, but that is another discussion altogether.) They do fine and don't want to live anywhere else. If you can't deal with it, move to Toronto imo, no one is forcing you to live here.
