The truth of the matter is this - a certified personal trainer needs to constantly introduce new exercises, equipment and advice to keep you paying! Most of the secrets they tell you are just common sense. Anyone who invests a few hours studying reliable and credible fitness information can be their own personal trainer.

A Typical Personal Trainers Advice...

· Eat small meals with protein and carbs
· Weight train between 2-4 times per week
· Do cardio 2-3 times a week
· Drink plenty of water
· Stop smoking - cut down on alcohol
· Reduce your fat intake
· Don't binge on sweets and cookies
· Keep a fitness journal
· Take a multivitamin
· Eat more protein

You know what my advice is to you? Use your head! Instead of forking over your hard earned money every week to a personal trainer, make an investment in yourself and get educated. Your investment will pay for itself 100 times over.

One area that fitness trainers /can/ help though is with proper form while doing weight training. It's amazing how a few minor adjustments in terms of grip / stance / etc can change an exercise from putting too much strain on the joints (and not doing you any good) to feeling it in all the right spots.

When it comes to exercises like Dead Lifts / Squats / Lunges - improper form will not only minimize the benefits you get from doing them - but doing them incorrectly can also lead to injury.

For someone that is just starting out, and planning on having weight training in their routine - I think having a few sessions with a trainer to go over solid form on the basics is a good idea.

I haven't spent any significant amount of time with a trainer - but when I'm with one - I find that their ability to adjust/correct your form (even when you think you're doing things fine) to be pretty beneficial.

I'm usually at my gym for about 8am. Need to be up by 6:45 at the latest to get there without feeling too rushed.

I find it easier to be motivated to wake up at around 6:30 to get to the gym, than it is to be motivated to go at 5:30 after work.

About the only way I'll stick to an after-work workout is if it's a group class - if I'm left to my own devices for weights / cardio - I bail and hardly put any effort into it.

I have to be at work at 7 so that's the only way I can do it - but I actually dont get up that much earlier than usual as I bike to the gym, which is next to the office. It takes half the time of TTC so the whole morning workout thing is super efficient so long as it's bikeable weather.

I much prefer working out in the morning.

I need to find a way to kick myself out of my bed so I can go to gym before work - I start at 11am so it would be perfect
but alas I'm NOT a morning person working out after 7pm has been pretty decent so far..
