Ding, ding, ding!

That can be said about pretty much any country, though. The older the country, however, the more diverse language gets (English has had more time to develop different accents in the UK than, let's say, Australia).

In fact I could use words from my home town 20 miles away and they would have no idea what I was talking about.

Wow. That's so awesome. I suppose if this character of mine was to say/or answers from whence he hails--and considering he uses the word "Guv"--the appropiate response would be southern (or northern?) London, making him a cockney?

Isn't Cockney English spoken in the East End?

By the way, R.J. I know nothing about your book but shouldn't you try to base your characters on things you actually know a fair bit about? Doing just a quick research may make your character look weird...

But this character that I'm referring to is just a stock character.

edit: I should also mention that this character has a very short appearance. But if I was to, say, get a fair understanding of the accent/lingo, I wouldn't be opposed/closed-minded to the idea of extending his role.

lol... I clicked "All your base are belong to us" and, what do you know? There's a long history of bases being invaded by enemy forces in both fiction and real life, heh.

For some reason this forum doesn't seem to attract England’s intellectual elite.
