its very intresting but definatley not unfathomable. Its convergent evolution in the works. We have swarms of insects (wasps bees) which do the same thing. And fish as jenny mentioned. These birds have very quick reflexes, large optic lobes and cerebellum to dictate naviational movement in coordinance with visual preception. form means function in the animal world so to have hypertrophied body parts (brain parts in this case) would dictate more advance functionality.


You should see how a blind bat tracks its fast moving prey using highly developed sonar type systems. This is also quite intresting and a tribute to our own Class.
