No, he's right. There is something in linguistics called "deixis", which is basically the representation of proximity in point of view. You'll notice that J1 starts off in the past tense and moves into the present. This is a common and effective temporal deictic strategy, bringing you "closer" to the events being described by removing the temporal distance.
