I lose my memory every time I drink, in varying degrees.
It's a problem I've had since a particularly boisterous holiday a few years ago.
It's gotten so bad that not only do I lose my medium term memory (i.e. waking up and not remembering the night the next day), but also my short term memory, so if I drink a lot (say 20 or 30 beers), I'll spend the whole night telling the same story to the same person, over and over, because I can't remember what I said 5 minutes ago. It's fucking embarrassing, but then again I probably deserve that after drinking 20 or 30 beers.

Will has it right, blacking it out is being so beyond wasted that you continue to function with absolutely no recollection of what you've done for several hours. With my case, the last thing I remember is playing a track then my girlfriend waking me up in the bathroom. 3 hours had gone by and I don't remember a second of it. Conversations, more drinks, me djing...don't remember a thing. |
It's a little freaky, isn't it? Once, my drinking buddies and I had actually changed houses, and I didn't even recall it happening. Hours later, the first thing I remember is complaining that I couldn't find the stairs to go upstairs to the toilet. They informed me that we were at Dave's house, and that there was no upstairs. There were some drugs involved in that one though...

What is 'blacking out'?
Under the definition I have used for years, it is the same as 'passing out,' i.e. losing consciousness and falling asleep involuntarily, but apparently everyone else seems to think the two are different. |
yup - passing out is when "wake up" in your bed (usually in your underwear, and probably with some vomit around you). blacking out is what you "wake up" and you're still actually functioning. passing out is usually your body's way of defending its self against more alcohol....like you've drank so much it just wants it out of your system, so it makes you throw up and go to sleep. this isn't always the case, of course, but a good majority. i think blacking out might be your mind trying to protect itself...the alcohol or other substances you're taking might be making you act in such an awful manner that the mind shuts down to prevent yourself from knowing it, despite you still physically functioning. i don't know, just a theory.
i agree w/ bas on this - what's the point of partying if you can't remember it?
i've blacked out a few times, and they've all been really sucky situations and it was all when i drank way to much, way to fast... especially that last time. whew boy. when i was in counseling after that, they said that blacking out was a sign of substance abuse.
