Not sure who the guy that opened was, but geeze he was playing 142 BPM from 1030 til John got on at 12. Gil and I had a bet how fast he was playing and I was shocked when I checked and it was 142. No respect for the headliner at all? Poor Askew had absolutely no where to go from there. Thats got to be frustrating

Last night was awesome. I had so much fun. I opened with Cosmic Gate's remix of "Find Yourself" feat Sarah Howells by JOC. The crowd was going nuts. There was so much energy in the place. The go-gos I put together looked great in their white and gold outfits and set the pace for the night with their feverish dancing and high energy. I told andr3x that the LMD crowd liked their closing sets hard and fast and I had no idea what he had in store for us. He was bangin' out some mashers that really had me mashed up. It was good to see a lot of familiar faces, some new ones, and some I hadn't seen in over 6 years.

I was lucky enough to roll up right when Josh Allen was parking and I found him with an ice cold Tecate. Josh was a good vibe all night and the Spundae crew of Gil La, Fei Fei, and Bjorn Nicolas were in the house as well. Fei Fei was sporting a black leather rocker sort of look. I guess that is her thing now. It's pretty hot. She puts Gil and Bjorn to shame when it comes to fashion... they were looking pretty plain.

I missed Sweetnuts set but did get to talk with him and he is a really nice guy. In2muzzik was there too and he was cool as well. Kevin S was bangin' it out at 10pm. There was no progressive warm-up to the night or anything. It was straight bangin' peak hour trance from 10pm all the way to 4am. I almost had a heart attack. I wasn't used to music being played so fast and hard at 10pm when I am just warming up my juices and getting into the party. I was really hoping to hear some progressive or some funky house to ease up to John Askew's set. John Askew was playing at 152 BPMs. I had to bring it down to 143 or so. Askew was bangin' it so hard, I couldn't tell heads from tails. It just sounded like a big woofer cone getting destroyed for two hours. If you got up in the booth you could tell he was playing some good tunes though because of the closeness to and the clarity of the monitors. John was gracious enough to give me two of his CDs. I didn't ask for them or anything, but he asked me if I had the tunes, and I said no, so he just handed them to me. He wants me to email him today to tell him what tunes they were. He was really nice. I think if he slowed down the set it would have been a lot more effective. I know in years previous the guys from the UK tended to play a lot faster than us yanks, but I'm not sure if that is still true. I totally agree with Mr. Allen. Kevin S should not have been playing at 142. That is just ridiculous. I was planning on doing my set at 138BPMs. Last time I did Circus main room I did 136BPMs. That was fast enough for me, especially after playing tech house and electro house all summer long at 130-132BPMS.

Paul A - The turn out was good. I thought there would be less people there, but we had a good crowd. The promoters really worked there asses off to get people there and we had a good Orange County crowd roll through.

Loc and Johnny liked most of my go-go dancers. Nicol, Angie, Larissa, and Leah really tore it up on the go-go booths. Sometimes people just take their work for granted, but they are artists as well and do a lot to add to the night and pump everyone up. They should really receive the same respect as DJs do if they are really good dancers. That's why I've invited some of them on my radio show. They deserve a little bit more of the spotlight and a voice to be heard. It is called DANCE MUSIC. I'm pretty sure Loc hired Larissa and Angie to come back and work more nights at Circus so you should expect them back soon.

Since I mentioned licking Malia's ear, I'll also add she looked really hot. She looked like a hot Daria with her glasses on. She was looking mighty fine. I hope that doesn't embarrass her. I think she likes the compliments and attention otherwise she wouldn't be on TA and sporting a hula hoop.

Oh yeah, there was a fashion show too and I got some video from it. I will post it later. Wow... fashion shows are the way to go. The models were super hot and the designer had some of the most amazing dresses and designer clothes I have ever seen. No, I'm not gay, but I can appreciate good fashion when I see it. I wish I had this designer as a stylist. I felt bad because the DJ of the fashion show took Mike Lord, Zan, and Robert Stern's decks away. They had to start a little bit later and the models were using part of the side room as a changing area. What can you do?

It looks like I am going to open for Rank 1 on my birthday weekend on Dec 19th and Gil La will close out the night. I promise not to bang it out at 142BPM. I will probably play around 132BPMs. We'll see. I will definitely not be playing at 142 BPMs and it won't be trance. It will be strictly progressive and tech house. You really do need to show respect to the headliner and give him some room to work with.

I started off the night with some Patron, Jager, and Mandarin Vodka so I was in good shape last night. I had some Heineken and Jack and Coke later. Thanks to LMD for the great drinks and the bartenders at Circus for serving them up. They are some of the best and friendliest bartenders in the world.

If you missed out, don't miss out next time when I am there. You're going to have Rank 1, Gil La, and a whole hot, fiery mess of DJs I hired for the side room. Blaz Gallegos (who used to spin at Circus in the 80s) is opening up the side room, followed by Andr3x, electro house whiz kid Steven Sabocor, Aaron Polyester (the king of polyester pants), and Langdon (from OC, who I think can out party any of us easily). I saw Langdon at Avalon last night and he was going strong. I think he headed to Barberella afterhours. I came home for a disco nap before getting my TA fix.

All in all, it was a great night. I even got to drop "Longest Road" sung by my favorite female vocalist and songwriter Lissie. You should see her live. She is Morgan Page's main vocalist for his tracks. EDM is just a side project for her. Her folk rock is absolutely amazing. She has so much soul it is incredible. This woman sings from her gut, you can feel it. I've never seen an artist quite like her. When I studied at Icon Collective, the teachers told me that she liked to smoke a big phatty before every recording session. "It always takes something," commented teacher CW, "whether it's a glass of wine or a big phatty." Yes, I agree, sometimes it does. Other times, it takes a lot of coffee. That can be useful in the studio. So have I written enough today? Reviews, tangents, etc.? Ok, I'm done. Thanks to everyone who came out and shared their love and support with me. You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the texts after the show.

Other than being worried, are you the type that actually gets upset if a headliner comes in and wants to play longer?

No, not at all. I was worried because this was andr3x's first gig at Circus and he put a lot of time and effort into promoting the gig and it would have been a shame if he didn't get to play at all or just got a 30-45 minute set. If Wolfgang Gartner or Abel Ramos or the Bingo Players want to play an extended set on my time, I don't have a problem with it at all. A four set isn't playing longer. It's cutting out two entire DJs on the bill and a breach of contract. John is a super nice guy and I understand him wanting to play 4 hours. Heck, I would love to play 4 hours every time, but if you have a certain number of DJs on the bill you have to give each of them a fair amount of time. I think I might have played maybe 45 mins and I gave the rest of the one hour and 15 to andr3x. Either way, we both got about an hour of playing time. About the same amount of time that SWEETNUTS got. Last time I played Circus main room when I headlined, I played for 3 hours. I've done 6 hour sets in the side room at Circus when Mordeno would get sick. Anyway, if you were a DJ and you had ever played with me, you would know that I am pretty mellow and easy going when it comes to DJs playing longer than their alloted set times. But you're not, so I'll let your EDM know-it-all snootiness slide this time.

No no, I wasn't being snooty. I was just asking an honest question. I didn't want to assume, so I asked. And was just hoping you weren't.

I understand your position and respect it since you were looking out for a friend.

Anyhoooww, wen you're a local being booked to close a night (whether you are right after the headliner or after a first closer), I just (personally!) think you should just always be prepared to not play at all in case the headliner wants to keep going, so as long as the crowd is into it and you get paid for coming and wasting your time. Oh, and a promise of a make-up date.

Being scratched at the last second when you're a closer is just something that comes with the territory. Sure it sucks when it happens, but everyone should expect it some time -- even if it's your first time. A headliner wanting to play longer typically means he's really feeling the crowd and the crowd is feeling him. When that happens, who is to tell a headliner that the closer(s) want(s) to play, so get off? :-p

Of course, a little proper notice would be nice (like 30 minutes+) so you don't sit there going WTF is going on, when are ya gonna get to play.

I was being sarcastic when I called you snooty. That's just my sense of humor. I understand what you are saying. I really think it depends on the situation and can't just be summed up into one maxim. There are many different variables at work. For instance, is the headliner a young headliner still paying his dues? Or is the headliner someone like Carl Cox or Danny Tenaglia who have payed their dues and have almost legendary status for being able to rock parties til the early dawn traveling the world over? Is the crowd into the set? How many people in the crowd are there to see the closers? How many are actually there to see the headliner? If you piss off your fanbase that are there to see you, you're not going to give them a good feeling the next time you promote a show. They might come at you and say, "Well, if you are closing, you're not going to play anyway so why should I come?"
