This will basically give you some of the latest technology (Core i7 has on die memory controller and they are showing HUGE performance gains as a result) but still on a relatively smaller budget. That is a pretty damn respectable system right there for the price.

Also, just an FYI, avoid like the plague, any and all Seagate 7200.11 drives. They are known to have high failure rates.

Anyways, you're also going to want a better power supply than these people are suggesting. With a duo core and a large hard drive you're going to want more than a 300-350. Not much more, but probably around 450-500.

And no i7.

i7 is clearly out of Domesticated's range. He's fine with a dual core if all he does is mix, listen to music, and various other computer tasks. 2 gigabytes is all he needs, he doesn't need 4 gigs, even though Windows 7 would probably shine more. It doesn't really matter if he doesn't get a top-of-the-line motherboard. Quad cores are awesome, but not necessary. Get a Western Digital Drive.

I'd just go for e8400/e8500 for a very nice (and quite overclockable) dual core intel cpu. (204/225) (3ghz/3.16ghz). I dunno personally I wouldn't go for onboard but a 9600gt will last you quite a while and it's pretty good value for money for a $100 card. With probably 3gb of ram.

Still, if an extra gig makes his computer boot up 10% faster then it'd be worth it.

That and q6600s are crap, similar priced dual core cpu's will beat them at basically anything, and domesticated hasn't mentioned many things that'll take account of two cores let alone 4.

Because the i5 and i3 CPUs aren't available yet. Also, because the on-die memory controller will help tremendously in every day ops. Is it a little more expensive? Yes, but it is worth the extra cost, imho.

I ended up being weak and getting a new 20" monitor (love the 1600 x 900 resolution), as well as a wireless keyboard and mouse, which are so much nicer.
