I figure it costs me about $100 a month to run my car.. Roughly the same as the TTC charges.

The extra cost of paying for my car and the insurance means i actually own something. Also it means i can go anywhere i want at any time.

Also, when i leave toronto i dont have to pay an additional GO pass, YRT pass, Via rail ticket etc etc.

In the long run having a car works out to slightly more than public transit but pays by saving a lot of time (time is money) and convenience.

I used to get a card from York until that got cut off it was like $94 or $96
I know some employers have the discounted program going, however we don't

to each their own - I TTC roughly 4 times a week, if it rains or if I'm going out, so my transit costs are pretty minimal

it also depends largely on where you live. if you live and work say in downtown, I'd think using a car to get around (within dt) on the regular would likely be pretty cost prohibitive.

you should try talking to them about it. it's a non-taxable benefit they can provide and it comes at no additional cost to them (i believe the unused passes are returned to the TTC for a refund after each month). minimum volume purchase is only 50 passes for a 12 month term. I'm sure you have at least 50 ppl who work at Cannex that take the subway on the regular

Cue communist street car pic: LOL

I agree with you about opening it up to the private sector. But that's another debate altogether.

Be sure though, that if they didn't hike the fare, they would get the money elsewhere (municipal taxes, provincial handouts, etc), and that means in the pockets of those who don't take the TTC at all, which is even worse imo.

And there lies the problem.

The TTC should be forced to run within it's means, not continuously run to the government with it's hands out begging for more money, and not raising it's fare every single year by 3-4 times the rate of inflation.

What do WE, the customer, get for this increased fare? Do we get an improvement of service, cleaner buses/trains, ANYTHING of note besides continued service? No. What we get is a big fat raise for TTC employees (not to say they don't deserve a fair wage, but come on, it's getting ridiculous what some of these employees make for the jobs they do), a continuation of the same shitty 'service' that's been provided for eons, and another year of uncontrolled spending that inevitably results in NEXT year's increase in fares.

On the bright side, maybe the fare increase will keep some of the smellies off the bus. It costs money to stay clean, so maybe there's a chance the smellies can't afford a more expensive ride :P

i think the problem is that the TTC doesn't look out of the box enough on more creative ways to raise funds. It's either raise fares, government support, or cut service.

I think they need to look at more mixed funding sources such as public/private partnerships and leveraging the use of their land.

At least when you pay for your car you own something and its at your disposal at all times.

Screw transit.

Nyc has increases with service delays at the same time.
